第2次大戦中のアフリカ戦線において、連合軍は、智将ロンメル元帥率いるドイツとの戦いに苦戦し、元帥の暗殺計画を試みるも失敗。ドイツの捕虜となった英軍将校のヤングは、あわや死の寸前、ロンメルの一言で救われ、敵ながらあっぱれと彼の立派な人柄に感心する。ところが戦後、そのロンメルの死が闇に包まれているのを不審に思ったヤングは、その死の真相を解くべく調査を開始。そこから浮かび上がったのは意外な事実だった。
