鬼才D・ジャーマンが、偉大なる哲学者ルードウィヒ・ヴィトゲンシュタインの生涯を独特の解釈によって映像化した作品。映画は、同性愛者であり、常に疎外感と戦い続けたヴィトゲンシュタインの苦悩・思想観などをジャーマン独特の美学によって映像化しその生涯を綴ったものだが、ヴィトゲンシュタインを緑色の火星人との対話によって自己探究をしてゆく主人公にするなど、彼の解釈が非常に面白い作品に仕上がっている。
