1958年、28歳のロビン・カヴェンディッシュは、出張先のナイロビでポリオに感染し、首から下が全身マヒとなり、人工呼吸器なしでは息もできくなってしまう。それは、美しい妻ダイアナと結婚してまだ間もないときだった。医師からは余命数ヵ月と宣告され、絶望に打ちひしがれるロビンは、生まれてきた息子ジョナサンを見ることさえ拒んでしまった。それでもダイアナは献身的に夫を支え、彼の望みを叶えるべく、医師の強い反対にもかかわらずロビンを自宅で看病しようと決意する。それはあまりにも危険で無謀なことに思われたが、その決断がやがてロビンの運命を大きく変えていく。

1682年フランス。国王のルイ14世は、国の栄華を象徴するヴェルサイユ宮殿の増改築を計画する。国王の庭園建築家アンドレ・ル・ノートルは、庭園の建設をサビーヌという無名の女性庭師との共同で任されることに。自由な発想で仕事に臨む彼女と伝統と秩序を大切にしてきたアンドレは、事あるごとに衝突してしまう。その後、徐々に彼女の唯一無二であるセンスを認め、彼女の魅力に惹かれていく。
