1958年、28歳のロビン・カヴェンディッシュは、出張先のナイロビでポリオに感染し、首から下が全身マヒとなり、人工呼吸器なしでは息もできくなってしまう。それは、美しい妻ダイアナと結婚してまだ間もないときだった。医師からは余命数ヵ月と宣告され、絶望に打ちひしがれるロビンは、生まれてきた息子ジョナサンを見ることさえ拒んでしまった。それでもダイアナは献身的に夫を支え、彼の望みを叶えるべく、医師の強い反対にもかかわらずロビンを自宅で看病しようと決意する。それはあまりにも危険で無謀なことに思われたが、その決断がやがてロビンの運命を大きく変えていく。
1950年。第二次世界大戦の終結による満州国の崩壊と国共内戦の終結により、共産主義国である中華人民共和国の一都市となったハルビン駅の構内。5年間にわたるソビエト連邦での抑留を解かれ、中華人民共和国に送還された「戦犯」達がごった返す中で、列から外れた1人の男が洗面所で自殺を試みる。男は監視人の手により一命を取り留めるものの、薄れ行く意識の中で幼い日々の頃を思い出していた。この男こそ清朝最後の皇帝にして満州国の皇帝、「ラスト・エンペラー」と呼ばれた愛新覚羅溥儀その人であった。
ヘンリー・ヒル、1943年ブルックリン生まれ。大物ギャング、ポーリーのアジトで育った彼は、物心ついた頃からマフィアに憧れていた。やがて念願の"グッドフェローズ"の仲間となり、"強奪"専門のジミー、野心旺盛なチンピラ、トミーと共に犯罪に犯罪を重ねていく。が、麻薬に手を出したことから育ての親、ポーリーに見放され、さらにジミーたちが起こした600万ドル強奪事件を追うCIAの捜査の手もヘンリーに迫る。
南アフリカ、1893年。ただ白人では無いことを理由に一人の青年紳士が列車の一等車から放り出され、この人種差別に青年は激しい怒りを覚えた。青年の名はモハンダス・Ｋ・ガンジー。ロンドンで法律を学んだ彼はインド人商社の顧問弁護士として南アフリカのダーバンへ渡って来たのだ。彼はインド人移民に呼びかけて身分証明カードを焼き拾てることを提唱する。
「セイ・エニシング」「ザ・エージェント」のキャメロン・クロウ監督が自身の体験を基に、ブレイク寸前のロックバンドのツアーの同行取材を任された15歳の少年の姿を描いた青春音楽ムービー。15歳の少年ウィリアムは伝説的なロック・ライターに自分の記事が気に入られ、ローリングストーン誌の仕事をもらう。さっそく取材で楽屋を訪れた彼は、グルーピーの中にいたペニー・レインに一目惚れする。
1942年9月。ナチス・ドイツの猛攻にさらされ陥落寸前のスターリングラード。そこへ送り込まれた新兵ヴァシリ。敵の銃弾が降り注ぐ中、死体に紛れて反撃の機をうかがっている時、同じように身を潜めていた青年政治将校ダニロフと出会う。ダニロフのライフルを借りたヴァシリは驚くべき正確さで敵兵を次々と仕留めていった。
ある夜、ウォーターゲート・ビルに侵入した四人の窃盗犯が現行犯逮捕された。単なる強盗と思われたこの事件だが、ワシントン・ポストの記者ボブ・ウッドワードとカール・バーンスタインは数々の疑念、妨害を乗り越え調査を進めていく。そして、これがのちに合衆国大統領ニクソンを失脚させる一大スキャンダルへと発展していくのだった…。
タルコフスキーとコンチャロフスキーという、旧ソ連の枠を脱して活躍することになる二大俊英が協力して脚本を執筆し、中世ロシア史上最高のイコン画家ルブリョフを主人公に、当時の社会と民衆の関わりを巨視的に捉えた歴史大作で、全体で二部構成。冒頭の、巨大な気球での飛行を試みる男たちの描写が象徴する閉鎖的な時代に、信仰と芸術の力によって風穴を開けたのがルブリョフと言える。彼は同窓の僧侶キリールに陥れられかけ、逆に大公の覚えめでたく宮廷画家となるが、連日、寺院の白い壁に向かい一筆も動かさない。神の愛を描きたいと願う彼の眼に時代は暗く映りすぎた。そして、公弟にそそのかされたタタール人が城を襲う（ここからが第二部）。ルブリョフは白痴の少女を救おうとして敵兵を討ち、後悔から筆を絶ち、修道院に戻るが、誰とも口をきかない。今や落魄の身のキリールとの再会……。ロシアはなお暗黒の中にあったが、大公は巨大な鐘の鋳造で威信回復を図る。今はなき名人の息子ボリースカの指導によって作業は開始され、ルブリョフはそれを興味深く見守る。秘訣を父に教わったという少年だが、実は鐘を作りたいばかりについた出まかせで、ようやく大鐘完成の暁に彼は真実を泣きながらルブリョフに明かす。彼は少年を賞賛し、自らも励まして言った。“君と一緒にやって行こう”……。１５年にわたる無言の行の末、最初に出た言葉がそれであった。彼は再び絵筆をとり、その後、それまでの白黒とうって変わった鮮やかなカラーで写し出される偉大な作品群を残したのである。観ることが主人公の忍従に重なるような重厚な作品だが、それ故にラストの解放感は筆舌に尽くし難い。丸裸の自己と神--という一対一の構図を発見するまでの確執を描くのは、後のタルコフスキー作品にも通じるテーマだ。
