大阪を舞台に描いた群像劇。通称「キタ」と呼ばれる大阪の繁華街で生きるアジア人たちの人生を描く。春のある日、大阪のキタにある古びたアパートの一室で白骨化した老女の死体が発見された。警察は捜査を開始し、アパート周辺で聞き込みを続けるが、孤独死なのか、あるいは財産がらみの謀殺なのか、さまざまな噂が飛び交っていた。同じころ、中国・台湾・韓国の観光客、マレーシアのビジネスマン、ネパールの難民、ミャンマー人留学生、ベトナム人技能実習生など、キタにやってきた外国人たちと、彼らと日常を共有する日本人たちの間に、さまざまな出来事が起こっている。やがて事件の捜査が終わるとき、人びとは新たな人生の岐路を迎える。

鳴かず飛ばずのティーン向け小説家（松たか子）は困っていた。つい雰囲気に流されて、書き方も分からない「本格ミステリーを書く！」と宣言してしまったのだ。担当編集者（神木隆之介）は呆れながらも構想を尋ねると、どれも見事にアガサ・クリスティーの超有名なミステリーのパクリや犯人が一瞬で分かる設定。あれこれ修正すると作家は逆ギレする始末。仕方なく編集者は構想を手伝うことにする。作家は壮大なイメージだけは描いており、世間はクリスマスシーズンという思い付きから「クリスマス・キャロル」の世界を舞台にし、そこに登場する極悪非道の貸金業者・スクルージ（小日向文世）が殺されるというミステリーを考え始める。 やっと書き終えたと安心して寝ようとした瞬間、「彼は犯人じゃない！！！」と気づいてしまう。書き直しをしようと慌てて編集者に連絡を取ろうとしたその時、現実でも事件が起きる――。

Hana, a high school girl, has been grown up in a foster home because of a crime her mother is said to have committed. As the oldest sister in the home, Hana takes care of a newly sheltered girl abused by her mother.

Masashi is a photographer. He has his parents and an older brother Yukihiro. Through the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, Masashi begins to take staged photos of his family.

Nitobe and Sakamoto are childhood friends who now work at the front desk of a capsule hotel. Nitobe has a particular fondness for philosophy and crustaceans. Sakamoto, meanwhile, is fixated on suicide. The capsule hotel draws a variety of guests, including a Finnish mother who has lost her child, a fugitive woman, and a researcher studying Daphnia. None of their lives ever intersect. They exist, but never cross, like cells in a capsule hotel. The themes of life and death are explored through a fragmentary view of the characters’ lives.

14年前に父親が出て行ってから、葉月と呼春の姉妹は母の佐和と3人で暮らしている。ある日、音信不通だった父が末期がんで死の床にあるという知らせが入り、2人は母に見舞いに行ってお別れしてくるようことづかる。彼女たちはしぶしぶ出掛けて行くが、道中で父の訃報を知り途方に暮れる。
