ホーマーはセント・クラウズの孤児院で生まれ育った。親代わりのラーチ院長の仕事である助産と当時は禁止されていた堕胎の仕事を手伝う彼だが、やがて自身の将来に不安を抱き始める。ある日、ホーマーは手術に訪れた若い女性キャンディとその恋人の軍人ウォリーと共に孤児院を飛び出した。彼はウォリーの誘いで彼の母親オリーヴが経営するリンゴ園で働き、収穫人たちの宿舎サイダーハウスで暮らし始めるが・・・。
