ロサンゼルスにあるグリーティングカード会社で働いているトムは、地味で冴えない毎日を送る青年。ロマンティックな出会いを期待しているが大学で建築を学んでいた彼には会社での仕事はつまらない。そんなはある日、秘書として職場にやってきたサマーに一目惚れしてしまう。出会いから４日目、偶然サマーと同じエレベーターに乗り合わせたとき、ふいに彼女は彼に声をかけ、そこから二人の交流が始まる。

大富豪だった父の財産を引き継いだ実業家・ニコラスは、父親が自殺した年齢である48歳の誕生日を迎える。久しぶりに会った弟は誕生日プレゼントとして、CRSという会社の紹介状を渡す。その後、たまたまCRS社のオフィスを見つけたニコラスは軽い気持ちでCRSの提供するゲームに参加することとなったが、その後、次々とニコラスの身の回りで不思議な出来事が起き始める。
