植物学者の老人フォーは妻のために木製のロボット“パルム”をつくった。ある日、フォーとパルムの前に女戦士が現れ、天界から持ち出した謎のカプセルを地底世界に届けることを2人に託すと忽然と姿を消してしまう。その直後、地底からの追っ手がやって来てフォーを刺す。死を悟ったフォーはカプセルをパルムのお腹に隠すと地底世界に向かうようパルムに言い聞かせるのだった。パルムは、旅の途中で多くの人間と出会い旅を共にする。ある日、地底世界に行けば人間になれることを知り、地底行きの意志をさらに強くするパルムだった。
