이상한 생물과 나무들이 혼재하는 지상세계 알키나. 식물학자 포는 마음의 병을 가진 아내 시안을 위해 크룹나무를 재료로 해서 마음을 가진 인형 파름을 만들어낸다. 하지만 파름에게 있어 어머니와도 같았던 시안이 죽고난 후 파름은 그 슬픔을 이기지 못하고 마음의 문을 닫아 버린다. 그러던 어느날 지저세계(타마스)의 솔 족 출신 여전사 코람이 천계(토토)에서 가지고나온 이상한 알을 들고 찾아온다. 코람은 그 알을 지저세계로 가져다 달라는 부탁을 하고는 홀연히 사라져버리고 만다. 그 직후 코람을 뒤쫒아온 지저세계의 사람들에 의해 포는 그만 치명상을 입게 된다. 그러나 포는 숨이 끊어지기 전에 토토에서 가져왔다는 알을 파름의 복부에 넣고는 지저세계로 가도록 시킨다. 이리하여 파름의 파란만장한 모험은 시작된다. 여행 도중에 파름은 소년절도단의 리더인 지저인 샤타와 그의 친구들, 또 마음씨 고운 소녀 포포를 만나며 많은 생각을 하게 된다. 그리고 이 여정에서 파름은 아주 놀라운 사실, 즉 지저세계에 가면 자신도 인간이 될 수 있다는 것을 알게 된다. "포포를 위해 나도 인간이 되는거야"라고 마음먹은 파름. 하지만 파름의 배에 장착된 그 알은 지저세계를 멸망시키게 하는 모종의 비밀이 숨겨져 있었는데.....
