ザック・メイオは、全裸で寝ている父バイロンと娼婦を見ながら、悲惨な少年時代を思い出していた。目覚めた父に、夢だったパイロットになるため海軍航空士官養成学校に入ると告げ、レーニエ基地内の学校に入学する。士官候補生を待っていたのは訓練教官の黒人軍曹フォーリーのしごきだった。４週が過ぎ、候補生は市民との懇親パーティーへの出席が許される。ザックはそこで製紙工場で働くポーラと出会い、二人はデートを重ねる。１３週にわたる激しい教練をこなしながら、同期との友情、芽生える愛、色々な出来事を織りなしながら成長していくザックの姿を描いていく。
