ルポライターの母田耕一は、磯部大蔵大臣の私設秘書である秦一毅の身辺を探っていた。だがその矢先、秦の家で働いていたお手伝いが殺されてしまう。手型占いをしているという秦の内妻の青蛾を追う母田は、後輩の須藤に連れて行かれたバーのママゆき子と知り合うが、そのあと何者かに殺害されてしまった。須藤は母田の仕事を引き継ぎ調査を進めるが、青蛾も変わり果てた姿で発見される。やがて須藤は、ゆき子から驚くべき過去を知らされるのだった。

「砂の器」の名コンビである松本清張(原作・脚色)と野村芳太郎監督のコンビによる、推理サスペンス・ドラマ。桃井かおりと岩下志麻を主役に迎え、自動車事故で死亡した富山の財閥と、その夫人に着せられた保険金殺人の疑惑を辣腕女弁護士が解明してみせる。富豪の後妻に桃井かおりが扮し、その独特のエロキューションや、悪女と呼ばれる女のふてぶてしさ、可愛らしさを見事に表現。対する女弁護士には岩下志麻が扮し、終始毅然とした“理性の女”ぶりを発揮。そのクールな表情は、時としてホラー映画さながらの冷徹さを見せるほど。 この“理と情”のシンボルとも言えるふたりの女を、野村監督の演出は見事な対比で描いて見せ、事件の概要をも彼女らの言動を通して観客がすんなり理解出来るあたりの手腕はさすが。また桃井の後妻は過去に関する描写にウエイトを置いている一方、岩下の弁護士は離婚歴があり、夫側にいる娘とのやりとりを通してしか、「なぜ、彼女がそういう女になったか?」について言及していない、この描きわけが面白い。観客としては当然、桃井の悪女のほうに感情移入しがちなのだが、その彼女の窮状を救うのが、岩下の冷静な判断力と推理であるあたりの皮肉とカタルシスが、爽快な後味を与えている。ただし判決確定後、ふたりの女が交わす本音のやりとりは、両女優の演技合戦という意味も含めて、世の男性諸氏を恐怖のどん底にたたき落とすほどの壮絶さ。ご注意を。

邦彦がまち子に会ったのは、母の納骨の日の早朝だった。彼が大黒橋の上で道頓堀の絵を書いている時に、足の悪い犬を追ってきた彼女と会ったのだ。邦彦は道頓堀川に面した喫茶店「リバー」の二階に住み込み昼は美術学校に通い、夕方からは店で働いていた。「リバー」のマスター武内の一人息子・政夫は邦彦の高校時代の同級生であり、日本一の玉突きの名人になるといい武内と衝突、家を出ていた。武内は納骨を済ませたその日、精進おとしだといって、邦彦を行きつけの小料理屋「梅の木」に連れていった。邦彦はそこでまち子に再会した。彼女は店のママで、もとは芸者だが今は不動産業を営む田村がパトロンだった。その日から邦彦はカンバスにまち子と足の悪い犬の絵を書くようになった。しばらくして犬がいなくなり、邦彦とまち子は道頓堀川筋を探したが見つからなかった。そのお礼にとまち子は邦彦を夕食に誘い、その夜「梅の木」の二階で二人は結ばれた。息子の不始末を知った武内は政夫を探して、千日前のビリヤード「紅白」を訪れ、そこの女王人ユキから政夫が東京まで勝負に出かけたこと、そして、ユキがかつてビリヤードしていた武内にどうしても勝てなかった玉田という老人の孫娘であることを知らされる。武内は息子と未来を賭けて勝負しようと思い「紅白」で特訓を始めた。その頃まち子はパトロンと別れアパートを借り、邦彦と生活しようと邦彦を探し、口説いた。邦彦が学校を卒業するまでの二年間だけでいいから一緒にいたいというまち子に、邦彦は大きくうなずいた。「紅白」では東京から勝負に負けて帰った政夫と武内の試合が始まった。試合中に武内は政夫が幼ない頃、ビリヤードのために妻の体を他の男に売り、金を作ったことを告白した。父と子の争いを見ていられなくなった邦彦は外へ出ると、「リバー」の常連のかおるが、幇間の石塚に包丁を振りかざしているのを見る。それを止めようと二人の間に入るが一つきに刺されてしまう。帰りの遅い邦彦を待ちながらまち子は窓の外を見ると、いなくなったあの犬がエサを漁っていた。犬を抱き上げ頬ずりするまち子の後を、赤く点滅させたパトカーが、道頓堀の方向へ消えていった。

その日、警察官の英次は雪の降り続く銭函駅ホームで、妻の直子と、4歳になる息子義高に別れを告げた。離婚を承諾した直子は、動き出した汽車の中で、英次に笑って敬礼するが、その目には涙が溢れていた。苛酷な仕事と、オリンピックの射撃選手に選ばれ合宿生活が続いていたことも原因であった。傷心をひきずる中、ある日の検問中、英次の上司・相馬が英次の目前で連続警察官射殺犯“指名22号”・森岡茂に射殺された。中川警視の「お前には日本人全ての期待がわかっている」との言葉に、犯人を追跡したい英次の願いは聞き入れられなかった。テレビが東京オリンピックマラソン競技三位の円谷幸吉の自殺を報じていた。「これ以上走れない……」英次にその気持が痛いほどわかった。

Hayato's home city is under attack from a gigantic robot. His parents are lying dead in the rubble and the only remaining friend is his dog. His only thought now is revenge against the owner of the Phantom Ship (from where the robot said he was sent). Based on the life and career of Fumiko Hayashi, the novelist whose work Naruse adapted to the screen several times, A Wanderer’s Notebook traces her bitter struggle for literary recognition in the first half of the twentieth century – her affairs with feckless men, the jobs she took to survive (peddler, waitress, bar maid), and her arduous, often humiliating attempts to get published in a male-dominated culture.

Yoshida’s first big-budget production and colour film is a haunting tale of unrequited love and postwar disillusion. The story of the fatal attraction between a spineless intellectual and a strong woman is conventional, but its enactment is radically new.
