人間にペットとして飼われているが、TV番組のヒーローに憧れるカメレオン。車で飼い主と移動中に事故に遭い、入っていた水槽ごと砂漠に放り出されてしまう。初めて広い世界に出たカメレオンは途方に暮れるが、寂れた荒野の町“ダートタウン”にさまよい着く。酒場で町の住人たちにランゴと名乗ったカメレオンは、でたらめな武勇伝を語った結果、町の保安官に任命されてしまう。その頃、町は深刻な水不足に見舞われていた。
