ソマリア沖。海底パイプラインの故障で、エンゲルら4人のダイバーが修理に向かうことになった。母船から水深約200メートルに作業ポッドが降ろされ、ダイバーたちは仕事に取りかかる。だがその矢先、突然の嵐でなんと母船が沈没してしまった。深海で孤立した上に、ポッドの酸素漏れでダイバーたちは深刻な危機に直面する。おまけに紛争地が近いこの海域にはろくに船も通らず、SOS信号が拾われる可能性も低い。

海洋サルベージの専門家ロビンソンは、ある日突然、１１年間も勤め続けた会社からクビを言い渡され途方にくれる。３０年近くも仕事一筋で家族を犠牲にしてきたロビンソンにとって陸上ので仕事は想定外。妻クリシーと１２歳の息子のマーティンも彼のもとを離れてしまった。そんな矢先、彼はかつての仕事仲間カーストンから耳寄りな情報を得る。第二次大戦時に莫大な金塊を積んだドイツ軍のＵボートが黒海のグルジア沖の深海に沈没したままになっているというのだ。
