ダンサーのオーディションを舞台上で再現させたブロードウェイのヒット・ミュージカルを完全映画化。ブロードウェイの売れっ子ディレクター・コレオグラファーのザックは、近くにオープンする新しいショーの為、男女各4人ずつのコーラスを選ぼうとオーディションを敢行した。全体で何人採るかも知らされないまま、ショー・ビジネスに夢を馳せる大勢の若者たちが集まり、その中からとりあえず17人がしぼられるが……。
