It is based on the story of The Ballad of Narayama updated to the present day, with the substitution of putting a parent into an old people's home for the abandonment of the original. The film won the Golden St. George and the FIPRESCI Prize at the 21st Moscow International Film Festival.

少年時代、2人組の殺し屋に家族を惨殺されたという忌まわしい過去を持つ伍郎。押し入れの奥に隠れていた彼は犯人に見つかったものの、温情で見逃してもらい、かろうじて命拾いしたのだった。成長して刑事となった彼は、ある事件を通じて宿敵と運命的な再会を果たす。その相手は現在、前科者の保護観察司を務める宮地と、その凶暴な弟・知治だった。やがて愛妻の冴子まで殺されてしまい、伍郎はついに復讐を決意する。
速見昇は“ハル”というハンドル名でパソコン通信の映画フォーラムにアクセスする。仕事も恋もうまくいかず鬱屈していた（ハル）に、励ましのメールを送ってきたのは（ほし）という人物だった。互いの実像をわからないまま二人は次第に本音を伝え合うようになる。やがて、（ほし）の住む盛岡に出張することになった（ハル）はそこで会おうと提案するが……。
In different parts of Tokyo, four young and seemingly healthy people suddenly die of heart failure at exactly the same moment. Reporter Kazuyuki Asakawa decides to investigate the deaths, and discovers that the four had stayed at a rural inn together just a week earlier. At the inn, he comes across a strange video that ends with a message saying that anyone who watches it will die exactly seven days later. Now the clock is ticking for Asakawa. Can he break the curse in time?
