ベトナム戦争が激化しつつある１９６８年、バージニア州のアーリントン国立墓地。ベトナム戦死者埋葬の儀式を司る第３歩兵隊のベテラン曹長ハザードは、かつてベトナムで活躍し勲章を受けた優秀な軍人。だが、その体験から、この戦争の意味について懐疑的な考えを持つようになっていた。一方、隊に配属された血気盛んな新兵ウィローは、一日も早く最前線で戦うことを望んでいた。戦死したウィローの父がかつてハザードと親しい戦友だったこともあり、戦意満々のウィローをハザードは複雑な思いで見守る。
