1995年、デトロイト。中産階級の白人が多く住む郊外とは“8マイルロード”で分断され、貧困層が多数を占める都市中心部。ジミーはここで無職の母と幼い妹の3人でトレイラー・ハウスに暮らしていた。彼は昼間プレス工場で働き、夜はヒップホップ・クラブ“シェルター”で毎週行われるラップ・バトルでの優勝を目指し、プロで成功することを夢見ていた。だが、彼は才能がありながらその実力を発揮出来ないでいる。加えて母ステファニーとの確執に悩んでいたジミーはある日、モデルを夢見るウェイトレスのアレックスと出会い恋に落ちるのだが…。
