ある日、宇宙に憧れる14歳の少年ベンは電気回路の上を飛んでいるような不思議な夢を見る。うなされて起きたベンは急いで夢で見た不思議な回路の様な物をメモし、同じ学校に通う友達で天才的な少年科学者ウォルフガングにその事を話す。翌日、上級生にいじめられいたべンを助けてくれたダレンが加わり、3人はウォルフガングの家の地下の実験室でベンが夢で見た不思議な回路の様な物を元にウォルフガングが製作した回路をコンピューターに繋いでみると、なんとコンピューターが勝手にプログラムを始め、目に見えない小さい不思議な球体が実験室に出現し実験室にあった本棚を貫通してしまう。ウォルフガングが研究を重ねると、その球体はコンピューターで移動させることができ、大きさが変えられ、なんでも貫通する程の強度がある事が判明する。3人はその球体を今度は外で出現させてみようと試みるが、その時うっかり、ベンのせいでウォルフガングが球体の中に入ってしまい、そのまま高速で空を飛んでなんと地面を突き抜けてしまう。しかしその事で人が中に入って飛べる事を知った3人はその球体に入って空を飛ぼうと計画する。そして3人は遊園地の廃材などを寄せ集めたコンピューター搭載の手作り搭乗装置を完成させ、ついに球体の中に入り空を飛ぶ事に成功したのだが、その時またしてもコンピューターが勝手にプログラムを始め、なんと何者かに宇宙に向かって引き寄せられている事に気付く・・・宇宙や科学、少年たちの夢見る心と冒険が「グレムリン」のジョー・ダンテ監督のユーモア溢れるタッチで描かれたSFファンタジーの傑作。
