1945年の夏。軍の密命を受けた京都帝国大学・物理学研究室の若き科学者・石村修（柳楽優弥）と研究員たちは原子核爆弾の研究開発を進めていた。研究に没頭する日々の中、建物疎開で家を失なった幼馴染の朝倉世津（有村架純）が修の家に居候することに。時を同じくして、修の弟・裕之（三浦春馬）が戦地から一時帰郷し、久しぶりの再会を喜ぶ3人。ひとときの幸せな時間の中で、戦地で裕之が負った深い心の傷を垣間見る修と世津だが、一方で物理学に魅了されていた修も、その裏側にある破壊の恐ろしさに葛藤を抱えていた。そんな二人を力強く包み込む世津はただ一人、戦争が終わった後の世界を見据えていた。それぞれの想いを受け止め、自分たちの未来のためと開発を急ぐ修と研究チームだが、運命の8月6日が訪れてしまう。日本中が絶望に打ちひしがれる中、それでも前を向く修が見出した新たな光とはーー？

大阪の団地で祖父母と両親、そして三つ子の姉たちと暮らす小学３年生の渦原琴子、通称こっこは、大家族の温かな愛情に包まれながらいつも不満だらけで、孤独に憧れていた。家と学校という限定された世界の中でいろいろなことに悩み、考えるこっこは、祖父・石太が教えてくれたイマジンという言葉を胸に少しずつ成長していく。
終戦を間近に控えた昭和20年の夏。赤城はこの町の開業医で患者を誰でも“肝臓病”と診断することから人々から“カンゾー先生”と揶揄されていた。そんな赤城の下にこの町にはめずらしい美人の看護婦ソノ子がやってくる。しかし、ソノ子は根はまじめながら、女郎だった母親の教えもあって、時々男に体を売っていた。
