東京・渋谷でトイレの清掃員として働く平山は、変化に乏しいながらも充実した日々を送っていた。同じような日々を繰り返すだけのように見えるものの、彼にとっては毎日が新鮮で小さな喜びに満ちている。古本の文庫を読むことと、フィルムカメラで木々を撮影するのが趣味の平山は、いつも小さなカメラを持ち歩いていた。

名古屋の女子高に通うお気楽女子高生のさやかは全く勉強せず、毎日友人たちと遊んで暮らしていた。今の状態では大学への内部進学すらままならないと案じた母は、さやかに塾に通うよう言いつける。彼女は金髪パーマにピアス、厚化粧にミニスカートのへそ出しルックで渋々入塾面接に行き、教師の坪田と出会う。

大手広告代理店に入社して間もない太田喜一郎（妻夫木聡）は、審査員として参加予定の世界一のテレビCMを決定する広告祭に向かう。夜ごと開催されるパーティーには同伴者がいなければならないことから、同じ職場の大田ひかり（北川景子）も妻として一緒に行くことに。さまざまな国から集結したクリエイターたちが自分の会社のCMをグランプリにしようと奔走する中、太田もひかりと共に奮闘する。

小さな２階建ロッジのパン屋が湖畔に開店した。夫の水縞尚が焼くパンと、妻のりえが入れるおいしいコーヒーが自慢の店。店名は、りえがお気に入りの絵本「月とマーニ」にちなんで「カフェマーニ」。たちまち近所で人気の店になり、子沢山で農家経営の広川一家、謎のトランクを持った阿部さん、地獄耳のガラス作家・陽子さん、そして毎日配達にきてくれる郵便屋さんなどの常連客に憩いの場を提供する。薪の竃で焼いたパンの他、自家菜園の野菜を使った料理も絶品。１階のテーブル席では、大きな窓に湖畔の景色が映え、日が没すると月夜が輝く。２階は簡易宿泊所になっており、ときどき、正面のバス停を利用して遠方から旅行客も訪れる。

北国の小さな町・海炭市の冬。造船所では大規模なリストラが行われ、職を失った颯太（竹原ピストル）は、妹の帆波（谷村美月）と二人で初日の出を見るため山に登ることに……。一方、家業のガス屋を継いだ晴夫（加瀬亮）は、事業がうまくいかず日々いら立ちを募らせていた。そんな中、彼は息子の顔に殴られたようなアザを発見する。

It was the flower of immortality, the "Golden Flower", which was said to bloom beside the Himalayan Virgin, which he had been looking for for many years.
