Ayane is the daughter of a karaage (fried food) store owner, but she never liked karaage. Eventually, she left home, only to return 5 years later. Her family lives in the city of Usa in Oita Prefecture, Japan. She brings with her a young girl named Shirley, who is her step-daughter from her ex-husband.

Hikari (Dai Watanabe) receives news that his father passed away. Hikari decides to take over his father's ramen shop. To do so, Hikari quits his job at a design company and goes back to his home town of Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture. Now, taking over his father's shop Hikari has problems recreating his father's recipe. Hikari thinks back to when he was a child and how his father believed Hikari never used his imagination. Hikari relies on his memory in attempt to recreate his father's recipe.

Hatano is living as an insomniac freelance typesetter alone in his bayside apartment. One day, Aikawa, a high school classmate he hasn’t seen in over ten years, shows up on his doorstep bearing a bag of clams. 17年ものプロ生活でまだ一度も優勝の経験がないプロゴルファー織部金次郎、通称“織金”。妻にも愛想を尽かされた彼は、離れて暮らすとはいえ、まだ父を慕ってくれる2人の娘の存在だけが心のよりどころだった。ある時、下町のゴルフ練習場でレッスンプロとして働き始めた織金は、ゴルフ好きが集まる地元のスナック「バーディー」のマスター周や彼の妹の桜子ら町の人々に応援され、再びトーナメント挑戦を決意する。

弘前中央署に、札幌署から堂垣内と佐藤の二人の刑事が訪ねて来た。彼らの依頼は、二年前札幌でおきた現金輸送車襲撃事件の証拠として残されたりんごの種の品種分析である。早速、片山刑事が二人をりんご試験場に案内したが、りんごの種から品種分析することは不可能であった。失意の二人を誘って入った喫茶店は、片山が今朝出会った少年たけしの母親・澄江の店であった。

七月、山笠祭りの暑い夜、博多署はあるソープランドを管理売春の容疑で不意打ち捜査した。刑事の片山元はそこで聾唖者の風俗嬢三沢ひさ子と出会った。翌朝、ガサ入れ失敗をマスコミは書きたてた。そのとばっちりが片山にまわってきて、沼津転勤が決まった。東京行きのブルートレインに片山とひさ子が乗っていた。ひさ子の悲惨な過去に同情した片山が身柄を引き取ったのだ。二人は兄妹ということで、市内の花園荘に住むことになった。そんな二人をじっと見ている二人がいた。
