Carlos Boyero is one of Spanish cinema's most followed and feared figures. Controversy has hounded him since he published his first article more than forty years ago, and he has remained in the eye of the hurricane ever since. Is he the last representative of a disappearing time? Has social media put an end to the traditional influence of the critics. Taking the background and personality of this very controversial figure as its basis, El crítico / The Critic will also endeavour to reflect on the enormous changes taking place in Spain in the field of film criticism.
Mortimer Brewster, a newspaper drama critic, playwright, and author known for his diatribes against marriage, suddenly falls in love and gets married; but when he makes a quick trip home to tell his two maiden aunts, he finds out his aunts' hobby - killing lonely old men and burying them in the cellar!

영화제에 심사위원으로 초청된 구경남. 프로그래머 공현희를 비롯한 영화인들과의 술자리를 핑계삼아 심사는 뒷전이다. 의무적인 영화관람이 계속되던 중 우연히 만난 오래전 절친 부상용을 만나고, 그의 집으로 향한다. 어김없이 벌어진 술자리는 부상용의 아내, 유신으로 인해 묘한 분위기로 마무리되고, 다음날 구경남은 뜬금없이 파렴치한으로 몰린채 도망치듯 제천을 떠난다. 제주도에 특강을 가게 된 구경남. 학생들과의 뒤풀이 자리에서 선배인 화백 양천수를 만나 다음날 그의 집으로 동행한다. 그는 양천수의 아내가 자신이 연모했던 후배 고순임을 알게 되고, 그녀는 구경남에게 은밀히 쪽지를 건넨다. 이 후, 고순을 다시 찾은 구경남. 두 사람은 불장난 같은 관계 중, 우연히 들른 동네주민 조씨에게 현장을 들키고 마는데….

20세기 초, 미국 동부의 어느 극장. 재능은 있으나 아직 빛을 못 본 극작가 투치오(존 터투로)는 인기 여배우인 레이첼(캐서린 보로위츠)과 연인 사이이다. ‘루스티카나’ 라는 연극이 상연되는 중, 주인공 피에로가 무대에서 쓰러지자 투치오는 무대에 나서 자신이 만든 ‘일루미나타 - 젊은 여자와 바람을 피우는 남자, 그 남자를 지독히 사랑하는 아내 일루미나타 이야기’를 상연할 것이라고 한다. 다음 날 ‘일루미나타’의 초연 후, 평론가인 베발라콰(크리스토퍼 월켄)는 혹평을 쏟아냈고 극장주는 입센의 ‘인형의 집’을 대신 상연해야겠다는 생각을 하고, 한 물 간 여배우 셀리멘느(수잔 서랜든)는 투치오를 유혹해야겠다는 결심을 한다. 위기에 처한 투치오를 위해 레이첼과 동료 배우들은 ‘일루미나타’를 계속 상연할 수 있는 작전을 세운다.
남다른 여성 편력으로도 유명했던 첼로의 대가 펠릭스의 사망 소식이 전해지고, 장례식에는 그의 부인뿐만 아니라 수많은 애인들과 콘서트 매니저 그리고 비평가 코넬리우스가 자리한다. 코넬리우스는 자서전 때문에 펠릭스를 만났던 때를 떠올린다. 며칠이 지나도 펠릭스를 만날 수 없었던 코넬리우스는 펠릭스의 여인들과 이야기하며 그들의 사생활에 대해 알게 된다. 급기야 코넬리우스는 펠릭스를 만나기 위해 여장을 하기에 이른다. 베리만 특유의 우울한 정서를 잃지 않으면서도 얼마나 즐겁고 황홀할 수 있는지 보여주는 코미디. 자기중심적인 예술가 펠릭스와 아집이 센 평론가 코넬리우스 사이의 긴장과 갈등을 통해 예술가와 평론가의 관계를 담아냈으며, 혹자는 평론가들을 향한 베리만의 목소리가 담겨 있다고도 말한다.
