길거리 농구를 즐기는 고등학생 자말 월러스(Jamal Wallace: 로버트 브라운 분) 그의 친구들은 동네 아파트에 거주하고 있는 이상한 남자에게 관심을 갖는다. 베일에 쌓인 인물에 대한 호기심이 극에 달한 자말은 어느날 밤 그의 아파트에 몰래 침입하지만 실수로 가방을 놓고 나오게 된다. 그리고 그 베일의 주인공 포레스터는 가방 속에서 평범함을 뛰어넘는 자말의 수많은 글들을 발견한다. 다음 날, 자말은 가방을 찾기 위해 아파트를 찾아가지만 되돌아오는 것은 차가운 반응 뿐. 그러나 포레스터의 목적은 다른데 있었다. 문학적 재능을 지닌 자말을 문학세계로 이끌어주기로 한 것이다. 포레스터는 지난 수년간 한번도 문을 열지 않았던 자신만의 세계에 자말을 받아들인다. 한편 자말의 문학적 재능이 교내테스트에서 드러나면서 자말은 맨하튼의 명문대 예비학교에 농구특기장학생으로 스카우트된다. 그러나 그때가지도 자말은 아파트의 괴팍한 노인이 위대한 작가 포레스터임을 전혀 알지 못한다. 자말은 자신의 가족과 삶을 나눈 고향 브롱스에서 나와 새로운 세상을 항해하기 시작한다. 이제 그에게는 낯설고도 엄격한 지식 공동체에서 나아갈 방향을 제시해주는 스승 포레스터와 마음의 안정을 가져다주는 친구 클레어가 있다. 그리고 때묻은 고전서적들과 정적만이 가득했던 포레스터의 은둔지는 두 작가의 웃음과 논쟁, 학문에의 열정으로 채워진다. 포레스터는 이 어린 제자를 따라 지난 40여년간 닫고 살아온 창 밖의 세상에 조금씩 닿아간다.

젊지만 근거지 없는 방랑자 '조 테일러'는 글래스고와 에딘버러 사이를 떠돌다가 '레스'와 그의 아내 '엘라' 소유의 바지선에서 직업을 구하게 된다. 어느 날 오후, 그들은 운하에 떠내려 온 벌거벗은 젊은 여자의 익사체를 발견하게 된다. '조'가 건져올린 시체를 두고 '타살'인지 '자살'인지 마을 사람들은 술렁이기 시작한다. 경찰의 수사가 진행되면서 타살 가능성이 제기되고, 유력한 용의자가 검거되는 과정에서 과거와 현재가 교차되며 살인에 얽힌 의문점들이 서서히 풀려나간다. 한편, 바지선이라는 폐쇄된 공간에서 시간이 흐를수록 서로의 묘한 매력에 끌리게 되는 '조'와 '엘라'. 급기야 남편의 눈을 피해 둘의 관계는 격정으로 치닫고 팽팽한 긴장감 속에 더욱 더 강렬해진다. 하지만 시간이 지날수록 '조'가 익사체로 떠오른 여인에 대해 뭔가 많은것을 알고 있다는 것이 밝혀지면서 이야기는 예상치 못한 방향으로 흘러가기 시작한다.

해니(로버트 도나트 분)는 캐나다에서 업무차 런던에 온다. 어느날 쇼구경을 갔다가 아나벨라(루시 맨하임 분)라는 묘령의 여인을 만난다. 이 여인은 해니를 따라 아파트까지 와서는 자신이 스파이이며 지금 쫓기고 있다고 말한다. 또한 스파이들이 영국 공군의 기밀을 외국에 넘기려 하고 있으며 자신이 그것을 막아야 한다고 한다. 그녀는 '39 계단'이라는 알 수 없는 암호를 이야기한다. 그러나 그날밤 아나벨라는 살해된다. 해니는 아나벨라가 얘기한 사람을 만나기 위해 스코틀랜드로 떠난다. 기차 안에서 해니는 자신이 아나벨라의 살인범으로 몰리고 있음을 발견한다. 또한 아나벨라를 살해한 스파이들에게도 쫓겨 해니는 파멜라(마델레인느 캐롤린 분)에게 도움을 청하나 거절당한다. 겨우 기차에서 탈출한 해니는 스코틀랜드의 어느 농가에서 하룻밤을 지내고 그 농가 아낙의 도움으로 다시 경찰의 추적에서 벗어난다. 구사일생으로 교수(고드프리 터얼 분)의 집에 도착한 해니는 교수가 스파이 두목이라는 것을 안다. 교수의 집에서도 탈출한 해니는 경찰에 가서 사실을 말하지만 아무도 믿어주지 않는다. 다시 경찰서에서 도망치게 되고 결국엔 파멜라의 신고로 경찰로 위장한 스파이들에게 잡히고 만다. 파멜라가 위험하다고 느낀 스파이들은 파멜라와 해니를 수갑으로 묶어 두지만 해니는 또다시 탈출한다. 결국 파멜라도 해니의 말을 믿게 되고 스파이 두목인 교수가 39계단에게 경고를 하려하며 런던 극장에서 기밀을 넘겨받아 국외로 탈출하려한다는 사실을 알게 된다. 파멜라는 런던 경시청에 가서 사실을 알리나 이들 또한 믿지 않는다. 런던 극장으로 간 해니는 뛰어난 기억력을 자랑하는 '미스터 메모리'라는 사람이 바로 기밀을 두뇌에 저장한 사람이며 이 자를 데리고 가려 한다는 것을 알게 된다.

'Festival' is a black comedy set during the annual Edinburgh Fringe festival. The film is based around both the judging of a major comedy award and the performers at one of the smaller venues. Various plot strands interweave, including the bitter relationship between a famous self-obsessed British comic and his ever-suffering assistant, an actress debuting at the festival with a one-woman show about Dorothy Wordsworth and a depressed, rich housewife who spies on the stoned Canadian theatre troupe to whom she has rented out her house

When Scottish young gentleman David Balfour's father dies, he leaves school to collect his inheritance from uncle Ebenezer, who in turn sells the boy as a future slave to a pirate ship. When staunch Stuart dynasty supporter Alan Breck Stewart accidentally boards the ship, he takes David along on his escape back to Edinburgh. They part and meet again repeatedly, mutually helpful against the Redcoats and respectful, although David is loyal to the English crown, but learns about its cruel oppression. Both ultimately face their adversaries.

"셸"은 스코틀랜드 하이랜드 지방의 외딴 주유소에서 성장한 십대 소녀 셸의 이야기를 다룬 일종의 로드무비다. 엄마는 셸이 어릴 때 집을 나갔고, 셸은 죽어가는 아버지를 돌보며 살고 있다. 십대가 된 셸은 아름답지만 고립된 이곳에 갇혔다는 생각을 떨쳐버릴 수가 없다. 셸은 쇠락한 주유소를 운영하고 병든 아버지를 돌보면서 종종 동네의 한 정비사와 침대에서 뒹굴며 시간을 흘려 보낸다. 트럭이 지나가며 집을 덜걱 거리게 만들 때마다 셸의 인생이 트럭과 함께 스쳐 지나가 버리는 것 같다. 어느 날 한 세일즈맨이 차에 주유를 하기 위해 잠시 멈추는데, 셸은 그를 통해 이곳이 아닌 다른 세상을 엿보게 되고 그로 인해 셸은 떠나고 싶은 욕망에 시달린다. 영화는 스코틀랜드 하이랜드에서 촬영됐다. 스코틀랜드 출신의 유망한 배우 로르나 크레이그가 셸 역을, "런던에서 브라이튼까지"의 샌디 모튼이 셸의 아버지 역을 맡았다. It's common knowledge that Scotsmen are macho enough to pull off wearing a skirt - perhaps it's all that caber-tossing. This disarmingly simple film concentrates on the tartan cloths of various clans rather than the men who wore them, and is an early filmic reminder of their huge importance to both Scottish national identity and the thriving tourist industry north of the border. The film's unique selling point was that pioneering filmmaker G. A. Smith showed off the vibrant designs in Kinemacolor, among the earliest colour film processes that didn't involve meticulous hand-painting. And no dangly bits in sight.
