악마의 공간이라 불리는 애팔래치아 광산. 메탄가스 유출로 늘 걱정과 공포에 시달리지만 광부들은 오늘도 기도와 함께 갱도로 들어간다. 본격적인 석탄 채굴과 함께 이상 징후가 발생하고 대피할 시간도 없이 폭발과 함께 무너져버린다. 게다가 침수까지 발생하고 산소는 단 1시간 밖에 없는데… 사상 최악의 광산 폭발 재난, 살아남기 위한 그들의 사투가 시작된다!

냉전이 지속되던 1957년 콜우드라는 한 탄광마을. 이 마을에 사는 남자아이들의 미래는 태어날 때부터 정해져 있다. 아버지를 따라 광부가 되는 것. 이런 미래를 당연하다는 듯 받아들여야 하는 호머는 소련의 첫 인공위성 발사성공에 대한 뉴스를 듣고 자신이 진정으로 되고 싶은 것에 대해 알게 된다. 하늘을 가로지르는 별을 바라보며 호머는 로켓을 만들기로 마음먹고 친구들과 로켓 연구에 몰입한다. 그러나 호머의 꿈을 덧없는 몽상이라 생각하는 아버지 존과 갈등하기 시작한다. 주위의 반대와 온갖 시행착오 끝에 서서히 그들의 로켓은 모습을 갖춰지고 마침내 시험 발사가 있는 날, 주변사람들의 비웃음과 반대를 뒤로한 채 로켓은 하늘을 향해 성공적으로 발사된다.

1950년대 한국전쟁 이후로부터 현재에 이르기까지 격변의 시대를 관통하며 살아온 우리 시대 아버지 덕수, 그는 하고 싶은 것도 되고 싶은 것도 많았지만 평생 단 한번도 자신을 위해 살아본 적이 없다. ‘괜찮다’ 웃어 보이고 ‘다행이다’ 눈물 훔치며 힘들었던 그때 그 시절, 오직 가족을 위해 굳세게 살아온 우리들의 아버지 이야기가 지금부터 시작된다.

세계 패션 산업이 날로 번창하던 어느 날, 말레이시아 수상이 미성년자의 노동 착취를 뿌리 뽑겠다고 천명하자 패션계는 발칵 뒤집어진다. 자사 물건을 대부분 임금이 산 외국에서 제작해 온 디자이너와 패션계의 거물들은 이제껏 그래왔듯이 방해인물을 제거하기로 합의한다. 필요한 것은 이들의 도구가 되어줄 멍청이뿐이었다.

With the aid of filming locals, however, Midi Z was able to compile this portrait. Getting rich quick turns out to be hard and risky work Jade has always been a valuable commodity in Asia. In the mountains in the north of Burma there are valuable deposits of jade. The area forms part of Kachin State, inhabited by many ethnic groups which found themselves embroiled in the Civil War in 2010 with the Burmese government. Jade mining was halted because of the conflict. Thousands of workers, however, went to the war zone in order to dig for illegal jade. It turned the region into a no-go area and the filmmaker Midi Z, who had so far made feature films in Burma, saw no opportunity to go and film there. It was far too dangerous. © iffr.com
