냉전이 지속되던 1957년 콜우드라는 한 탄광마을. 이 마을에 사는 남자아이들의 미래는 태어날 때부터 정해져 있다. 아버지를 따라 광부가 되는 것. 이런 미래를 당연하다는 듯 받아들여야 하는 호머는 소련의 첫 인공위성 발사성공에 대한 뉴스를 듣고 자신이 진정으로 되고 싶은 것에 대해 알게 된다. 하늘을 가로지르는 별을 바라보며 호머는 로켓을 만들기로 마음먹고 친구들과 로켓 연구에 몰입한다. 그러나 호머의 꿈을 덧없는 몽상이라 생각하는 아버지 존과 갈등하기 시작한다. 주위의 반대와 온갖 시행착오 끝에 서서히 그들의 로켓은 모습을 갖춰지고 마침내 시험 발사가 있는 날, 주변사람들의 비웃음과 반대를 뒤로한 채 로켓은 하늘을 향해 성공적으로 발사된다.
