1880년대 유럽의 귀족 일단이 '백인 사냥꾼'이란 별명을 가진 카우보이, 보스키 풀톤(스티븐 보이드 분)의 가이드 아래 뉴멕시코에서 사냥 여행을 시작한다. 영국 귀족 프레드릭(피터 반 에릭 분)의 청혼을 받고 있는 미모의 여인 이리나(브리짓 바르도 분)는 인디언 보호구역에 들어갔다가 아파치들에게 포위됐으나 샬라코(숀 코너리 분)의 도움으로 무사히 돌아온다. 샬라코는 프레드릭 일행에게 보호구역 밖으로 떠나라고 충고하지만 그들은 거절하는데. 결국 아파치가 이들의 캠프를 습격하고 안내인 풀톤(스테판 보이드 분)은 그 틈을 이용하여 재물과 탄약을 약탈하여 캠프를 떠난다. 프레드릭 일행의 위기를 알게 된 샬라코는 다시 캠프로 돌아와 일행을 안전한 고원 지대로 안내한다. 그러는 동안 샬라코와 이리나는 가까운 사이가 된다. 캠프를 떠났던 풀톤 일행은 아파치의 습격으로 전멸당하고 풀톤만 빠져 나와 샬라코에게 도움을 청한다. 고원 지대에 도착한 일행은 뒤쫓아 온 아파치와 치열한 전투를 버린다. 젊은 아파치 지도자 섀도우는 샬라코에게 1대 1 대결을 요구하고 그 결투에서 지자 샬라코 일행을 무사히 돌려보낸다.

서부의 유명한 총잡이인 지미 링고는 가는데마다 멋모르는 젊은이들 때문에 늘 싸움에 휘말린다. 그러던 중 에디라는 청년을 죽이게 되고, 그의 세 형에게 쫓긴다. 그는 사랑하는 여인인 페기와 아들이 있는 마을로 가지만 페기는 그를 만나주려 하지 않고 그녀를 기다리며 설득하는 동안 에디의 형들은 그를 쫓아 마을까지 온다. 가까스로 그 형들은 따돌렸지만 그 마을의 망나니인 헌트가 뒤에서 총을 쏘는 바람에 지미 링고는 죽게 된다. 그는 죽으며 헌트에게 벌을 내리는 대신 자신처럼 유명인으로서 쫓기며 살게 하라고 당부한다.

A group under siege at an Army fort grapple with painful memories.

A gunfighter, stranded in the desert, comes across the aftermath of a stage robbery, in which all the passengers were killed. He takes one of the horses to ride to town to report the massacre, but finds himself accused of it. He also finds himself accused of the murder of the local banker, and winds up hiding in the basement of a house where the local sheriff, who is very sick, lives with his daughter.
