시놉시스
Dr. Allen Seward is assigned to a western cavalry post where his predecessors had been drunks and slackers. The post doesn't take kindly to him either, especially after he disregards regulations and tends to sick Indians on the malaria-infested reservation. The Indians break away from the reservation to move to a healthier higher ground, and when they join with the Comanches to besiege the fort, Seward is branded as a "woodhawk", the bird that turns against its own. Donna Reed is present as the niece of the post commander; Phil Carey is a cavalry captain that believes the only good Indian is a dead Indian, and May Wynn is the white girl raised by the Indians and married to the chief's son.

존 던버(케빈 코스트너)는 연합군의 리더로 시민 전쟁에서 승리한 영웅이다. 그는 미국 개척지에서 근무하길 원했으나 받아들여지지 않았다. 어느 날 막사 근처를 맴도는 늑대 한 마리를 발견한 그는 드디어 늑대와 친해져 모닥불 아래서 함께 춤을 출 수 있을 정도가 된다. 그러던 어느날 그는 인디언 종족을 만나게 되는데, 거기서 추장의 딸인 주먹쥐고 일어서와 사랑에 빠진다. 인디언 땅을 계속해서 점령하려는 연합군에 맞서 싸우면서 존 던버는 인디언 종족과 더욱 친해지고, 문명이라는 이름으로 파괴를 일삼는 연합군에 맞선다.
무자비한 갱단인 던컨 일당은 한 평화로운 나바호족 인디언 마을을 습격해 사람들을 죽이고 한 여자의 머리 가죽을 벗겨 간다. 처참하게 죽은 아내를 발견한 남편 조는 던컨에게 복수하기 위해 일당을 쫓아간다. 한편 에스페란자 마을에 도착한 던컨은 마을의사 린과 공모해 거액을 운반하는 기차를 털기로 한다. 하지만 조가 선수를 쳐서 기차를 먼저 훔친 귀 마을로 가서 던컨 일당으로부터 마을을 지켜주는 대신 돈을 요구하지만 마을 사람들은 인디언과의 거래를 꺼리며 조의 제안을 거절한다. 오랜 노력 끝에 의사의 부인이 주민들을 설득하고 조에게 던컨 일당 퇴치를 부탁한다. 함정에 빠진 조는 던컨 일당에게 생포돼 고문을 당하지만 다행히 구출되고 던컨과의 최후의 결판을 짓게 된다. 숨 막히는 결투 끝에 조는 던컨이 훔쳐간 아내의 목걸이를 되찾고 던컨에게 피의 복수를 한다.
