영화는 두 쌍의 사기꾼의 이야기가 평행하게 펼쳐지다가 후반부에 하나로 얽히는 방식으로 전개된다. 블랑슈(바바라 해리스)는 그의 정부이며 택시 운전사인 럼리(브루스 던)가 수집한 정보를 토대로 용한 점쟁이 행세를 하는 사기꾼이다. 한편, 보석상인 애덤슨과 그의 정부 프랜(캐런 블랙)은 요인을 납치하여 몸값으로 다이아몬드를 요구하는 범죄를 일삼는다. 사건은 갑부인 레인버드 부인이 재산을 물려줄 핏줄이 없어 40년 전 그녀의 집안에 양자로 들어온 동생의 사생아를 찾아나서면서 시작된다. 레인버드 부인의 의뢰를 받은 블랑슈는 럼리의 도움으로 사생아를 찾아내는데, 그는 바로 보석상인 윌리엄이었다. 레인버드 부인의 재산을 가로채기 위해 두 쌍의 사기꾼이 충돌하고, 결국 공동묘지에서 맞부딪쳐 브레이크가 고장난 차를 타고 구불구불한 산길을 내려가는 위기에 처한다.
