경찰관 에드워드 말러스는 고속도로에서 사고로 숨져가는 모자를 구하지 못한 죄책감에 괴로운 시간을 보낸다. 그러던 어느날, 수년전 아무예고도 없이 자신을 떠났던 약혼녀 윌로우가 쓴 절박한 편지 한통이 에드워드에게 도착한다. 윌로우는 자신의 딸 로완이 사라졌으며, 에드워드만이 자신을 믿고 로완을 찾는 일을 도와줄 수 있을 것이라고 애원한다. 이에 자신의 죄책감으로부터 벗어날 수 있는 구원의 기회라고 생각한 에드워드는 그녀가 있는 북서태평양의 외딴 섬 '서머시즐(Summersisle)'로 향한다. 비밀스러운 이교도적 문화가 도사리고 있는 서머시즐 섬에서 사건을 수사하던 에드워드는 무서운 진실과 마주치게 되는데...

항상 자신을 무시하는 남편과 양로원에 몸져 누워있는 숙모를 뒷바라지 하며 어느 덧 중년의 나이에 든 애블린. 신물나게 반복되는 일상 속에서 그녀는 고질적인 식성으로 몸매를 망쳐버린다. 어느날 그녀는 양로원에서 만난 80세의 노파 니니가 들려주는 앨라배마주의 휫슬 스탑 이야기에 빠져든다. 니니의 회상으로 영화는 50년전 미국남부로 돌아간다. 잇지는 가장 사랑했던 오빠의 죽음 이후 오빠가 사랑했던 여인 루스에게 호감을 느낀다. 어느날 남편에게 얻어맞은 루스를 집으로 데려온 잇지는 임신한 그녀와 함께 기차역 근처에 튀긴 토마토를 특별 요리로 제공하는 휫슬 스탑이라는 까페를 경영하며 행복한 시간을 보낸다. 잇지와 루스의 우정은 유난스러워 그 누구도 둘 사이에 끼어들 수 없을 정도이다. 그러나 흑인에게 차별을 두지 않는 그들은 백인에게 거부감을 느끼게 하고 KKK단의 위협을 받기도 한다. 이때 루스의 망나니 남편이 아들을 강제로 데려가던 날 밤, 그는 실종되고 마는데...

마케도니아의 어느 산골 마을에 늙은 어머니와 함께 살아가는 아티제는 매일 돌산을 넘으며 자연이 허락하는 만큼의 소산물을 얻는다. 지루하지만 능숙한 그녀의 움직임을 따라 자연이 펼쳐지고 그녀가 벌을 다루며 꿀을 얻는 방식에서 조화롭게 사는 삶의 태도를 목격하게 된다. 그녀의 옆으로 새로운 이웃들이 찾아온다. 그들은 아티제의 지혜와 조언에 따라 그녀가 고수하는 전통적 방식을 배우려 노력하지만 그들의 욕망에 비해 자연은 턱없이 부족하기만 하다. 결국, 서로 다른 삶의 방식은 대립하고 아티제의 꿀벌마저 위기에 놓인다.

미이일 통신 센터의 직원들이 몰살당하는 사고가 발생하자 슬레이터 소장은 원인 규명을 위해 현장에 출동했다가 곤충학자인 크레인 박사(마이클 케인 분)와 의사인 헬레나 대위(캐서린 로스 분)를 만난다. 몰살 원인이 살인 벌떼의 습격으로 밝혀지자 크레인은 사태 수습의 총 책임자로 임명되고, 면역학자 크림 박사(헨리 폰다 분)를 모셔와 해독제 제작에 몰두하게 된다.
