카니발의 열풍이 뜨겁던 전야에 에우리디쎄는 리오에 도착하여 사촌 세라피나를 찾아간다. 동네는 카니발에 선보일 행열 연습으로 떠들썩한데 동네의 우상인 오르페를 알게 되고, 짧은 시간내에 둘은 순수한 사랑을 나누게 된다. 그러나 죽음의 탈을 쓴 한 남자가 에우리디쎄를 계속 쫓아다니며 그녀를 공포에 떨게 한다. 세라피나는 사랑에 빠진 에우리디쎄를 자신의 의상을 입혀 카니발 행렬에 참여하게 하는데 탈을 쓴 남자는 그녀를 알아내고 쫓아간다. 그를 피해 도망치던 에우리디쎄는 사고로 죽게 되고 오르페는 그녀를 안고 집으로 돌아간다. 그녀를 안고 돌아오는 것을 본 그의 애인 미라는 정신이 나가 욕을 하며 돌을 던진다. 결국 머리에 돌을 맞고 오르페는 에우리디쎄를 안은 채 벼랑으로 떨어져 같이 죽게 된다.

패티 파마(Patty Palmer : 멜라니 그리피스 분)와 드레이크 굿맨(Drake Goodman : 매튜 모딘 분)은 고급 주택가 퍼시픽 하이츠에 있는 빅토리아식의 호화 주택을 구입했다. 낡은 내부를 부부는 정성껏 수리해서 꿈에 그려던 성으로 완성하지만 엄청난 수리비와 은행 융자로 방 2개를 세놓기로 합의본다. 좋은 인상을 가진 일본인 부부는 흡족해하면서 뒤쪽 방을 빌리기로 하고 이사를 했다. 흑인 베이커는 앞쪽의 방이 마음에 들었으나, 그 사이 나타난 백인 카터 헤이스(Carter Hayes : 마이클 키튼 분)가 현금 2천불을 선금으로 내겠다는 조건을 달고 방을 가로채 버린다. 목돈이 필요했던 드레이크는 독신이고 여행가이며 돈 많은 신사라는 점에 마음이 쏠려 전세 계약을 해버리고 만다. 그러나 헤이스가 이사온 날부터 이상한 일이 발생하기 시작했다.
