Babes on Swing Street (1944)

앨 루이스(조지 번스 분)와 윌리 클락(월터 매튜 분)은 이제 기억력도 오락가락하고 거동도 느릿느릿한 백발노인이지만, 과거엔 환상의 보드빌 콤비로 이름을 날린 코미디언이다. 일상에서도 유머와 재치가 넘치는 쟁쟁한 실력파 배우인 그들은 무대에서 티격태격하며 배꼽을 쥐게 하지만 성격이 무척 달라 실제론 사이가 좋지 않다. 앨의 은퇴로 명콤비가 해체되면서 거의 앙숙이 돼 오랜 세월 말도 안 해온 상태. 쇼프로 프로듀서인 윌리의 조카 벤(리차드 벤자민 분)은 특집 방송을 앞두고 두 사람의 재결합을 위해 출연을 적극 제의하지만, 윌리는 앨과의 공동출연이라는 말에 노발대발한다. 벤의 중재로 겨우 재회 겸 리허설 자리를 마련하나, 서로 꼬투리를 물고 트집만 잡다 비위가 뒤틀린다. 벤의 끈질긴 설득으로 두 노배우는 촬영 전 일체 상종 않는 조건하에 출연하기로 한다. 그런데 막상 촬영 당일, 연기 도중 앨은 윌리가 가장 싫어하는 두 가지 행동을 한다. 말하면서 침 세례 퍼붓기와 손가락으로 삿대질하기다. 꼭지가 돌아버린 윌리는 대사를 깡그리 무시하고 그간 마음에 쌓아뒀던 불만을 쏟으며 인신공격에 열을 올리다 심장마비로 쓰러진다. 앨은 미안하고 걱정스런 마음에 윌리의 집에 꽃바구니와 사탕을 계속해 보내면서도 친구의 흥분을 자극할까봐 이름을 안 밝힌다. 시간이 좀 지나 앨이 찾아오자 윌리는 사과하러 온 줄 알고 쾌재를 외친다. 하지만 윌리와 똑같이 옹고집에 자존심 센 앨이 사과할리 만무. 오히려 윌리가 늘 조크를 진지하게 받아들여 병을 자초한 거라고 헐뜯는다. 그러나 퉁명스럽게 굴면서도 속으론 화해를 나누고, 내내 옥신각신하지만 주고받는 담화에서 끈끈한 정이 느껴진다.

루스벨트 대통령의 초대를 받아 백악관에 간 코핸은 지난날을 회상한다. 그는 유년시절에 가족의 보드빌에서 잘난 체하는 아이 역할을 맡아 연기한다. 그 후 그는 단독으로 나설 결심을 하고 작가이자 제작자인 샘 해리스와 손을 잡는다. In this chronicle of a vaudeville family, Myrtle McKinley (class of 1900) goes to San Francisco to attend business school, but ends up in a chorus line. Soon, star Frank Burt notices her talent, hires her for a "two-act", then marries her. Incidents of the marriage and the growing pains of eldest daughter Miriam are followed, interspersed with nostalgic musical numbers.

The plot is built around two charming sisters — a strict, wayward Galina, an assistant professor of mathematics, and a windy, frivolous student Shurochka. Despite the fact that the girls are so different, they are looking, of course, for one thing — love. The events take place in the summer pre-war Moscow and in the country where both sisters go: one in order to prepare for the re-examination, the other — to conduct math classes with the military from the Yuryev Camps located near the dacha village. Funny and difficult situations, intrigues, tears, joy — all this will be experienced by young girls on the way to their happiness.
