O Klearhos, i Marina kai o kontos (1961)

양로원에서 무료한 삶을 살아가던 노인들이 이상하게 생긴 커다란 돌이 들어 있는 이웃집 풀장에서 수영을 하고 난 뒤로는 이상하게 젊어지기 시작한다. 사실 그 돌은 외계인들이 멕시코만의 해저에서 자신의 동족이 잠자고 있는 생명의 돌, 즉 코쿤이었다. 그 사실을 모르는 노인들은 이 풀장에서 수영을 하면서 우연한 기회에 외계인들과 마주치게 된다. 하지만 두려움은 잠시였고 외계인들과 노인들은 마음 속 깊이 따뜻한 사랑의 감정을 나눈다.

각자의 목적으로 황혼기에 인도를 찾았던 에블린(주디 덴치), 더글라스(빌 나이), 뮤리엘(매기 스미스) 등 여섯 명의 영국인들은 자이푸르의 ‘베스트 엑조틱 메리골드 호텔’에 머물면서 새로운 인생을 살아간다. 뮤리엘과 함께 호텔을 공동으로 경영하는 소니(데브 파텔)는 호텔 확장 제안서를 미국 투자자에게 제출한 뒤, 손님으로 위장하고 호텔을 방문할 심사원을 기다린다. 마침내 호텔의 운명을 좌우할 심사원으로 생각되는 가이 챔버스(리처드 기어)가 도착하자 소니는 극진한 친절을 베푼다. 또한 코앞으로 닥친 결혼식을 제쳐두고 챔버스의 한심을 사는 데만 골몰하여 약혼녀를 실망시킨다. 그런데 소니가 구입하여 확장하려는 호텔을 라이벌인 쿠샬이 먼저 손에 넣는다. 이처럼 소니가 호텔 확장과 결혼식 때문에 전전긍긍하는 동안 노년의 투숙객들에게도 피할 수 없는 선택의 순간이 다가오는데…

5년 전, 안테리아라는 혹성에 갔던 노인들이 자기네가 본래 살던 요양소(양노원)에 다시 찾아오면서 갖가지 재미있는 사건이 벌어진다. 벤과 메어리 부부가 먼저 TV를 통해 손자 데이빗과 만나고 뒤이어 며느리 수잔을 만나면서 이들이 죽은 줄로만 알았던 수잔이 졸도를 한다. 이어서 아트와 조, 알마, 베스가 버니가요양소 생활에 절망을 느낀 나머지 버니가 자살하려던 순간에 나타난다. 안테리아 별에서는 늙거나 병에 걸리거나 죽은 일이 없기 때문에 세월이 흘렀음에도 아트 일행은 예전 그대로인데 버니는 늙은 것이다. 한편 배 밑창이 유리로 된 유람선 선장 잭은 갑자기 나타난 외계인 여자 친구 키티를 만나 재회의 기쁨과 함께 독특한 외계인식 나눠가짐(성행위)도 갖는다. 이때, 심해 밑바닥에 설치해 둔 코쿤(외계인이 들어 있는 거대한 조가비) 가운데 하나가 지진으로 인해 튕겨져 나옴으로써 러시아 해양학 연구소 측에 발견되어 죽게 될 위기에 빠지자, 이 문제로 파견된 키티는 잭에게 도움을 청하고 동시에 아트 등 지구 출신에게도 도움을 청하게 된다. 그 사이에 외계에서 돌아온 노인들은 젊은 농구선수들과 시합을 벌여 극적으로 이기는 묘기를 보여준다. 한편, 베스와 아트 사이엔 노령에도 불구하고 아이가 태어나고, 홀아비 버니는 역시 혼자된 루비와 사랑이 싹트고, 벤은 손자의 야구 훈련을 도와주고, 알마는 뮤의 아들에게 외계인 얘기를 해줌으로써 유치원 원장으로부터 보모 제의를 받게 되었으나, 남편 조는 백혈병이 재발되어 내일을 알 수 없게 되던 중, 아내가 소년을 구하려다 차에 치어 혼수상태가 되자 자기 몸의 기를 넣어주고 결국 대신 죽는다. 이러한 우여곡절 끝에 야구를 못해 만사에 의욕상실이었던 데이빗 덕분에 외계인 구출에 결정적인 도움을 받은 벤은 외계로 돌아가려던 순간에 부모가 자식보다 오래 살면 안된다는 아내 메어리의 뜻에 따라 지구에 남기로 함으로써 감동적인 순간을 맞게 된다.

전형적인 중상층 가장 노만은 어릴적 경찰이 되는게 꿈이었던 만큼 경찰이 등장하는 영화나 드라마를 보는 것이 낙이다. 오랜기간 관람한 탓에 걸어다니는 수사 드라마 백과사전이다. 어느날, 노만의 집에 경찰이 찾아와 그의 이웃에 위험한 용의자가 살고 있어 잠복근무를 해야한다고 말한다. 흔쾌히 승락한 노만은 자신이 진짜 경찰이 된 듯이 흥분하여, 30년간 드라마에서 본 모든 수사기법을 총동원해 사건에 끼어든다. 하지만 결과적으로 노만은 다된 밥에 재뿌리는 일만 벌이고, 위험한 악당은 노만의 가족을 의심하기 시작한다.

Ota is a retired high-school teacher and at this point in life has various foibles that complicate life for his son and daughter-in-law. Moreover, he has a complicated and risky eye operation ahead. That is why Ota decides that this is the time to look up Jana, the retired actress who had influenced the course of his life many years ago. However, his reunion with Jana - who lives in a retirement home - works out differently to his expectations. Although disappointed at first, it is actually this zestful lady who sets Ota in the right direction again. Thanks to Jana, Ota finds the courage to set out on an exciting road-movie trip of the kind he would never have had the courage for in his youth. Their meeting and the excursion, full of unexpected turns and new impressions, give their lives a new dimension.

Aristeidis, on his way to Mary's house as a series of misfortunes and ends up in a fight with Andreas (whom he does not know) while he is with Betty at a studio apartment.
