[수입 수출]은 서로 다른 나라로 향하는 두 사람에 대해 이야기한다. 첫 번째는 젊은 간호사이자 갓난아기의 엄마이며 생계를 짊어지고 있는 올가에 대한 이야기. 그녀는 우크라이나에서 버는 돈으로는 도저히 생계를 유지할 수 없어 결국엔 오스트리아로 떠난다. 그 낯선 나라에서 그녀는 일을 구하지만 번번히 잃고, 가까스로 구한 병원 청소부 일을 하는 올가는 그 곳에서 죽어가는 병자들과 우정을 나누지만 친했던 할아버지가 죽은 뒤 삶의 의욕이 꺾인다. 다른 한 이야기는 젊은 오스트리아인 파울이 풀어간다. 그는 여자친구와의 관계도 원만치 않고, 돈벌이도 시원찮다. 그의 양부는 결국 그를 우크라이나로 데려가 도박게임기 설치하는 일을 맡긴다. 하지만 그들은 사사건건 부딪히고 끝내 파울은 양부를 뒤로하고 나와버린다.

미국에서 자란 유태인 조나단은 나치로부터 할아버지를 구해준 인물을 찾아 우크라이나로 향한다. 그를 안내해 줄 가이드는 장님인 체 하는 괴팍한 노인과 영어에 서툰 알렉스, 그리고 사나운 똥개 새미 데이비스 주니어 주니어. 채식주의자이고 개 공포증이 있는 조나단은 유태인과 미국인을 싫어하는 가이드와 함께 할아버지의 숨겨진 과거를 찾아 떠난다.

앙숙인 두 집안의 이반과 마리치카 부부의 불행한 사랑과 마리치카가 죽고 난 후의 이반의 삶과 결혼에 대한 이야기가 그들의 사랑처럼 험준하지만 아름다운 카르파티아 산지를 배경으로 펼쳐진다. 세르게이 파라자노프는 1970년대에 나타난 이른바 ‘소비에트 누벨바그’를 대표하는 감독 중 한 사람이다. 그는 자신의 조국 조지아의 예술적 전통을 영화에 녹여내려 했지만 당시 소련 당국은 영화의 뚜렷한 민족주의적 색채를 문제 삼아 그의 작품 대부분을 상영금지 시켰으며 감독 또한 수 차례 감옥에 가야 했다.

미국 출신 젊은 연인인 필과 사포는 열정적인 사랑 끝에 결혼을 한 후 그리스의 섬인 레스보스로 신혼여행을 떠난다. 백만장자 의 딸인 사포는 진정한 자아를 찾기 위해 끈임없이 자기 자신과 자신의 성 정체성에 대해서 고민한다. 얼마 지나지 않아 러시아 고고학자의 딸인 헬렌 을 만나게 되고 그녀의 열린 마음에 반해 연인으로 발전한다. 헬렌으로 인해 사포는 그녀와 동명이인 인 한 고대 여류시인 사포를 알게 되고 그녀의 삶과 시에 매력을 느낀다. 사포는 그녀의 남편에게 헬렌을 소개하며 세 명 모두 행복하게 연인 관계를 맺으며 살게 되기를 바란다. 하지만 필과 헬렌의 관계가 더욱더 가까워질수록 사포는 질투하기 시작하며 고대 여류 시인 사포와 같은 길 을 걷기 시작한다. " 신과 같은 행운아여, 당신 옆에 앉은 그 남자는 당신을 향하여 미소 짓고……. " 마침내, 그들의 삼각관계는 사포의 폭력적인 행동으로 파멸에 치닫게 되고 사포는 자신이 고대 여류시인 사포의 화신 이라고 확신하게 된다. 그 후 사포는 자신의 전신이라 믿는 시인 사포에 얽힌 끔찍한 전설과 같은 운명 을 걷게 된다.

폴란드가 터키의 침공을 받자, 폴란드에 인접한 기마족 코사크는 폴란드와의 동맹국으로서 전쟁에 참여한다. 하지만 폴란드가 배신하자, 코사크족은 대초원을 되찾기 위한 재기와 복수를 다짐한다. 이들 중 한 사람인 용맹한 용사 타라스 부리바는 이즈음 아들 안드레이를 낳고 용감한 용사로 키우려한다. 청년으로 성장한 안드레이는 아버지의 뜻에 따라 학문을 배우기 위해 동생과 폴란드의 학교에 들어간다. 코사크라는 이유로 많은 배척을 받던 안드레이는 폴란드의 귀족 처녀 나탈리아를 보고 한 눈에 반한다. 두 사람이 사랑하는 사이가 되자, 이를 시기한 나탈리아의 애인인 알렉스 대위를 살해하게 되고 안드레이와 그의 동생은 탈출을 감행하여 2년만에 초원의 집으로 돌아온다. 타라스는 폴란드 제국과의 동맹 협정으로 전쟁을 반대하고 있는 족장 니콜라스를 물리치고 진군한다. 마침내 폴란드와 코사크와의 대규모 전쟁이 시작되는데, 타라스가 지휘하는 코사크는 폴란드군을 제압하고 드브르 성을 포위한다. 부상을 치료한 안드레이는 성안에 있는 나탈리아를 만나기 위해 어둠을 틈타 성안에 잠입하여 안드레이와 재회하지만, 결국 함께 잡히고 만다. 나탈리아가 화형에 처할 위기를 맞자 안드레이는 그녀를 구할 조건으로 성밖의 소떼를 끌고 올 것을 약속한다. 하지만 아버지 타라스와 마주친 안드레이는 결국 총을 맞고 쓰러진다. 이때 폴란드군은 총공격을 감행하자, 코사크는 이를 무찌르고 큰 희생 끝에 승리한다. 나탈리아는 들판에 쓰러져 있는 안드레이의 시신을 발견하고는 슬퍼한다.

The Russian Malwa is based on a Maxim Gorky yarn. The title character, played by Zidra Ritenbergs, is the restless wife of a provincial village fisherman. Unwilling to dedicate herself to her husband, Malwa seeks out love from every man she meets. This results in a romantic triangle that is at once disarmingly simplistic and intensely dramatic. Malwa was the final directorial effort of Vladimir Braun, who died in 1957. Star Zidra Ritenbergs won a "Best Actress" award at the Venice Film Festival; co-stars Pavel Usovicenko and Anatoll Ighnaliev also earned praise for their realistic performances.
