Também conhecido como "Sombras dos Ancestrais Esquecidos", o filme mais célebre de Sergei Paradjanov conta a história dos amores contrariados de dois jovens de famílias rivais, que acabam por se reunir na morte. Mas dizer que este filme louco e poético "conta uma história" é limitar o seu alcance. Inspirando-se em lendas ucranianas, Paradjanov também se inspirou nas ricas tradições folclóricas da região, na música, nas cores, nos ritos. Em perpétuo movimento, o filme é um prodigioso emaranhado de imagens de grande beleza, que contam em filigrana a história dos amores infelizes dos protagonistas.

O filme “Sappho”, foi produzido na Crimeia, pelo novo estúdio ucraniano “Yalta Film”. É uma história de um triângulo amoroso entre casal americano Sappho (Avalon Barrie), Phil (Todd Soley) na sua lua de mel e a Helene (Lyudmila Shiryaeva), a filha do arqueólogo russo Professor Orlov (actor ucraniano Bohdan Stupka).A história tem lugar nos anos 1920 na ilha grega de Lesbos e lembra a lenda grega sobre a poetisa Safo (Sappho), que foi a “responsável” pelo termo lésbica. Mas o papel importante cabe à própria natureza da Crimeia, que tem sítios lindíssimos, muitíssimo parecidos com as ilhas gregas. A música no filme é de Mikis Theodorakis e da sua filha Maro Theodorakis.
