2003년 1월의 베를린, 버스 정류장이 있던 장소에서 놀라운 광경이 펼쳐졌다. 25개국에서 온 250명의 학생이 스트라빈스키의 “봄의 제전”에 맞춰 춤을 춘 것이다. 베를린 필하모닉 오케스트라의 첫 번째 대규모 교육 프로젝트를 통해, 클래식 음악의 문외한이었던 이들이 3개월의 연습기간을 거쳐 음악과 예술의 세계에 흠뻑 빠져든다.

줄리아드 무용 학교에 진학해 발레리나가 되고 싶은 세라(줄리아 스타일스). 하지만 갑작스러운 어머니의 사망으로 꿈을 포기한다. 세라는 오랫동안 보지 못했던 아버지를 따라 시카고의 빈민 지역에서 살게 된다. 전학을 간 세라는 자신이 유일한 백인 학생이라는 것을 발견한다. 학교에서 데릭과 슈닐 남매를 만난 사라는 새로운 열정에 눈을 뜨게 되는데…

Sara joins Julliard in New York to fulfill her and her mother's dream of becoming the Prima ballerina of the school. She befriends her roommates, Zoe and Miles, who teach hip-hop classes. She has ballet classes with the rigid and famous Monique Delacroix that she idolizes - Monique requires full commitment, discipline and hard work from her students. When Miles, who is a composer, invites Sara to help him compose the music for the dance choreography Sara's passion for hip-hop is sparked and she also falls in love with Miles. When she is assigned to perform Giselle in an important event, she feels divided between the technique of the ballet and the creative work offered by Miles.

미국 최고의 발레 스쿨 ABA (American Ballet Academy). 최고의 발레리나가 되고자 하는 뜨거운 열정을 지녔으나 아직 테크닉이 부족한 아름다운 조디 소여(Jody Sawyer: 아만다 슐 분), 선천적인 재능으로 발레에 꼭 맞는 부드러운 발과 능숙한 기술을 가졌지만 늘 반항적인 태도로 교사로부터 미움을 받는 이바 로드리게즈(Eva Rodriguez: 조 샌다나 분), 자신이 진짜 원하는 건 무엇인지 알지도 못한 채 엄마의 꿈을 대신 짊어지고 최고만을 향해 달리는 냉정한 모린 커밍스(Maureen Cummings: 수잔 메이 프랫 분). 그리고 전통과 규칙만을 중시하는 'ABA'에서 늘 부딪히는 두 교사 조나단(Jonathan Reeves: 피터 갤러거 분)과 쿠퍼(Cooper Nielson: 에단 스티펠 분). 개성과 일탈을 중시하며 항상 파격적인 무대로 화제를 몰고 다니는 젊은 무용수 쿠퍼는 전통만을 고집하는 조나단에게 자신의 연인이었던 발레리나 캐서린(Kathleen: 줄리 켄트 분)을 뺏기게 되면서, 라이벌 이상의 감정을 지니게 된다. 열정에 비해 클래식 발레에는 적합하지 않은 미숙한 테크닉으로 계속 부진한 성적을 얻는 조디는 쿠퍼를 만나면서, 자신에게 어울릴 또 다른 무대를 발견하여 자신감을 찾게 되고, 엄마의 말에만 따르던 모린은 남자 친구 짐(Jim Gordon: 이온 베일리 분)을 만나면서 자신의 진정한 꿈이 무엇인지 되묻기 시작한다. 한편 ABA 전체 학생들을 대상으로 하는 최종 오디션을 위해 마련되는 작품전을 통해 조나단과 쿠퍼는 각자의 팀을 꾸려 연습하기 시작한다. 갖은 사건들 속에 드디어 모린과 함께하는 조나단의 작품과 조디를 주인공으로 하는 쿠퍼의 작품은 수많은 관중들이 지켜보는 가운데 무대에 올려지게 되는데.

신비로운 유니콘이 뛰놀던 아주 먼 옛날 옛적, 마법에 걸린 숲에는 젊고 아름다운 소녀 오데뜨가 살고 있었어요. 그런데 모두가 행복하게 지내고 있던 어느 날, 사악한 마법사 로트바르트가 숲에 나타나면서 어둠이 드리워지기 시작했어요. 로트바르트는 숲을 지키고 있던 요정의 여왕을 물리친 후 숲을 자신의 차지로 만들고 숲에 사악한 마법을 걸어놓았답니다. 그리고 아름다운 오데뜨에게 반한 로트바르트는 오데뜨를 백조의 모습으로 만들어 버렸습니다. 낮에는 백조의 모습으로 밤에는 인간의 모습으로 살아야 하는 오데뜨는 자신의 이러한 처지가 슬프고 힘겹게 느껴지지만 곧 용감하게 슬픔을 이겨냅니다. 오데뜨는 자신이 로트바르트의 마법에 걸린 숲과 마법에 걸린 사람들을 구해야 하는 운명이라고 생각합니다. 그런데 과연 어리고 약한 소녀의 힘으로 무시무시한 마법사와 싸울 수 있을까요? 오데뜨가 갖고 있는 것은 단지 용기와 정직함, 그리고 지혜뿐입니다. 그러던 어느 날, 홀로 마법사에게 대항하고 있는 오데뜨 앞에 아름답고 멋진 왕자가 이 숲을 찾아오고 그는 그만 오데뜨의 모습에 한눈에 반해버리고 맙니다. 오데뜨는 이 왕자님과 함께 숲을 지킬 수 있을까요?

<불타는 가슴>의 발레 공연을 끝내고 극단 감독 보리스는 파티 초대에 응한다. 아마추어들은 질색이라며 자신을 위해 공연하는 조카 비키를 보고 싶어하지 않던 그는 막상 아름답고 젊은 그녀를 대하자 생각이 바뀐다. 비키는 그에게 '춤은 그에게 있어 인생 그 자체보다 더 중요한 것'이라고 얘기한다. 한편, 줄리앙이라는 학생은 그의 스승인 팔머 교수가 <불타는 가슴>의 공연을 위해 자신의 작품을 훔쳤다고 말하며 작품 노트를 보리스에게 보낸다. 줄리앙의 재능을 눈치챈 보리스는 그를 오케스트라 코치로 고용한다. 보리스는 비키의 독무대를 구경한 뒤 그녀의 재능과 춤에 대한 열정에 감명받고 발레단에 들어올 것을 제의한다. 그는 또한 줄리앙의 작품에 만족해하며 그에게 작곡을 위해 더 많은 자유를 누리도록 해 준다. 발레단은 공연 여행을 시작하는데 수석 발레리나가 결혼 때문에 춤을 포기한다. 보리스는 그녀를 보며 재능있는 무용수가 사랑 때문에 예술을 버리는 것은 낭비라고 여긴다. 결국 그는 동화 <분홍신>을 각색한 발레 음악의 작곡을 줄리앙에게 맡기게 된다.

The Gay Parisian is an American short film produced in 1941 by Warner Bros. featuring the Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo and directed by Jean Negulesco. The film is a screen adaptation, in Technicolor, of the 1938 ballet Gaîté Parisienne, choreographed by Léonide Massine to music by Jacques Offenbach. It was nominated for an Academy Award at the 14th Academy Awards for Best Short Subject (Two-Reel).

Petit's earlier production for the Ballet de Marseille used more realistic stage sets, but the current Paris version has minimal stage sets. Also, the costumes were redesigned. Roland Petit created a ballet based on "In Search of Lost Time" for the Ballet de Marseille in the 1970s. Petit's intention was not to make a faithful adaptation of the novel, but to capture its flavour and convey, through a number of selected scenes, the narrator's incessant fluctuations between happiness and torment. The highlights are the series of poetical pas de deux.
