1970년대 미국의 일부 작가들은 프렌치 누아르의 피를 물려받았으면서도 일말의 낭만성조차 부정하며 건조한 삶으로 뛰어들었다. 보스턴 지하세계의 지옥도를 그린 이 영화는 현실을 두고 거짓말을 하지 않는다. 세 아이와 부인을 둔 코일은 쉰을 갓 넘긴 중년 남자다. 그는 총 밀반입자와 은행 강도단 사이에 위치한다. 애송이 밀반입자는 돈을 위해 얼치기 은행털이들과 따로 거래하고, 범죄 기록에서 풀려나려는 코일은 경찰과 거래하는 과정에서 총 밀반입자를 넘긴다. 코일이 들르는 술집의 딜런은 친구처럼 굴지만 경찰의 끄나풀이자 킬러다. 코일이 조직의 윗선까지 건드리려 하자, 조직은 딜런과 접촉해 처리를 요청한다. 은행 강도로 인해 긴장감으로 시작하나 총격장면은 한번밖에 안 나오는 영화다. 제목에는 친구라는 단어가 붙어 있으나 기실 친구는 눈을 씻고 봐도 찾지 못할 영화다. 경찰은 딜런에게 “우리는 오랫동안 친구로 지냈습니다. 그런데 나는 친구에게 그가 할 수 없는 것을 부탁하지 않습니다. 나는 그가 하지 못하리란 걸 알기 때문입니다”라고 말한다. 에디 주변의 모든 남자들이 그렇듯, 그들 또한 친구가 아니었던 거다. 역설적인 제목인 거다. 조직은 의리의 서클이 아닌, 돈을 주고받는 직업적 동료의 집합에 불과한 거다. 70년대 미국영화는 동부의 도시를 사랑했다. 도시와 서부는 공히 황량하지만, 따뜻하고 정의로운 서부의 세계는 싸늘하고 추악한 동부 앞에서 사라지고 만다. 배신에 익숙하고 인생에 지친 남자의 역할에 로버트 미첨만 한 배우는 없다(은 얼마나 부당한 배역인가). 에서 에 이르는 수많은 영화에서 그가 슬픈 표정을 짓는 이유를 깨달았을 때, 나는 존 웨인보다 미첨을 더 사랑하게 됐다.
