아방가르드 작곡가 칼하인츠 슈톡하우젠이 영화 사운드트랙을 담당했다. 흑백에 컬러가 부분적으로 구현된 영화는 시네마스코프용으로 제작되었다. 실사와 애니메이션을 결합하고, 빛을 활용해 방 안에서 홀로 편지를 쓰는 한 여인의 내면을 형상화한다. 연필심은 자꾸 부러지고 여인은 계속해서 편지를 쓰는데, 여인의 감정에 따라 창문 밖에 보이는 빛의 풍경이 변화한다. 이 영화는 정신병원에서 줄곧 남편에게 편지를 썼던 엠마 호크에게 헌정하는 것이다. BBC와 파이프라인 필름스의 단편 음악영화 시리즈 ‘사운드 온 필름 인터내셔널 Sound on Film International’의 일환으로 코닝크스튜디오의 키스 그리피스가 제작했다.

기이한 이미지에 집착하는 퀘이 형제의 독특한 취향이 이 애니메이션에서 완벽하게 실현된다. 16세기에서 17세기 회화 작품에서는 보는 각도에 따라 감상이 달라지도록 하는 테크닉이 유행했는데, 퀘이 형제는 여기에서 그 기법을 사용해 시각적 효과를 주고 있다.

실험주의 록 밴드 ‘히즈 네임 이즈 얼라이브 His Name Is Alive’의 음악을 사운드트랙으로 하는 3분짜리 안무 애니메이션. 봉제 인형, 흰 토끼, 종잡을 수 없이 움직이는 탁구공의 어울리지 않는 조합을 보고 있으면 최면에 빠진 듯한 묘한 매력이 느껴지면서, 동시에 어떤 사건이 일어날 것만 같은 조마조마한 기분이 들기도 한다. 마치 막스 에른스트가 만든 뮤직비디오를 보는 듯하다. 이 섬세한 흑백 영상은 러닝타임이 짧지만 퀘이 형제의 걸작으로 평가받는다.

어두침침한 방 안에 남자와 여자가 있다. 방 밖으로 희고 밝은 해부실이 줄지어 있고 그곳에서는 인간을 대상으로 한 해부가 은밀히 진행 중이다. 아무래도 남자와 여자는 다음 해부 대상인 듯하다. 로코코 화가 장 오노레 프라고나르의 회화에서 영감을 받은 이 퍼핏 애니메이션은 내러티브는 존재하지만 그 주제나 의미는 쉽게 파악되지 않는다. ‘개인이 시스템 내에서 어떤 영향력을 미칠 수 있는가’와 같은 주제를 암시하는 작품이다.

세계에서 가장 기이한 박물관을 들여다본다. 박물관에는 헨리 웰컴 경이 의학적인 호기심을 가지고 모은 희귀 컬렉션이 소장돼 있다. 퀘이 형제는 이를 신비하고 정교한 조합에 강렬한 상상력을 불어넣어 영화화했다.

I sat in my little room, reading or writing, and looked at the sea. I decided to place my Bolex exactly at the angle of light as what Signac saw from his studio which was just behind where I was staying, and film the view from morning till after sunset, frame by frame. 퀘이 형제 초기 작품으로 얀 슈반크마예르를 본뜬 인형(퍼핏)이 여러 주제에 대해 가르치는 구성을 갖고 있다. 펼쳐진 책을 머리에 쓴 슈반크마예르와 달리 강의를 듣는 인형(퍼핏)의 머리는 텅 빈 상태인데, 강의가 진행될 때마다 유사한 주제의 책으로 머리의 빈 공간이 채워지는 걸 볼 수 있다. 아홉 번의 강의마다 슈반크마예르 영화의 중요성이 다양하게 드러나며, 여러 영화적 기술이 특이하게 조합된 것이 특징이다.

텔레비전 채널 BBC2에서 로고 영상을 의뢰해 제작한 영화. 하지만 BBC로부터 사용을 거절당하고, 이후 세 시퀀스가 지금의 형태를 띠게 되었다.

박물관 큐레이터가 오래된 상자 안에 침을 떨어뜨리자 상자 속에 잠들어 있던 인형(퍼핏)이 깨어나 움직인다. 인형은 먼지가 내려앉고 때가 묻은 악몽 같은 지하 세계로 관객을 인도한다.

Hamdias, a producer who's set out to break new boundaries, plans to finance a film about torture. According to him, torture, the clash of two or more people, is not only what substantiates basic human relationships but also love and politics. Unfortunately Hamdias dies in a freak accident and his project is grounded. After some time, Galai (Olga Karlatos), who should have been the main actress of Hamdias movie, sets out to complete the controversial project. As soon as filming starts again, the thin line that separates reality from a nightmarish obsession begins slowly to blur.
