영화의 원제 ‘발견의 해’는 콜럼버스가 아메리카 대륙을 발견한 1492년을 지칭한다. 반면 현대 역사에서 ‘발견의 해’로 얘기되는 1992년은 바르셀로나 올림픽과 세비아 엑스포가 열려 ‘강국 스페인’으로서의 이미지를 다시금 내세운 해였다. 또한 무르시아 지역 산업 위기로 엄청난 규모의 노동자 시위가 일어난 때였으나 미디어는 ‘잔치’만을 기록하기에 바빴다. 영화는 1992년과 현재를 오가며 무르시아 시내 한 카페에서 다양한 연령대의 사람들이 나누는 대화를 기록한다. 일상 얘기부터 노동조합, 인종 차별, 파시스트, 독재로 이어지는 토론까지 카메라는 화자와 청자를 클로즈업해 보여준다.

Employees dressed in American football helmets and pads square up with employers' heavies in their bullet-proof vests, resulting in explosive situations. A visit from the Russian tycoon's representative and vice president Joe Biden's arrival further complicates the proceedings.

동성금속 단조반에 신입 주완익이 들어오고 단조반원들은 그를 환영한다. 200여 명의 단조반원 중 가난을 벗어버리고 싶은 한수에게는 소박한 꿈이 있다. 동생을 대학에 보내고, 봉제공장에 다니는 미자와 결혼하여 단란한 가정을 꾸리는 것. 한편 김 전무는 노조 결성에 대비해 치밀한 사전 준비를 해나가고, 한수는 평소에 알고 지내던 주임에게 회사 편에 선 노동자로 포섭된다. 단조반원의 중심인물인 석구와 원기는 노조 건설을 결의하고, 단조반원들은 잔업 및 특근 거부 등을 벌이며 노조 설립을 준비한다. 주임으로부터 반장 승진을 제안 받은 한수는 완익을 밀고한다. 이로 인해 완익의 대학생 신분이 발각되고, 해고와 동시에 구속된다. 노조 창립 이후 회사는 노조 핵심 인물들을 해고하지만, 노조원들은 출근 투쟁을 벌이며 회사와 맞선다. 그러던 중 원기가 피습당하는 사건이 발생하고, 노조원들은 이를 한수의 짓이라 생각한다. 이 일로 한수는 관리자들의 농간에 놀아났음을 알게 된다. 회사 측은 폭력배들을 고용해 점거 농성 중인 해고 노동자들을 무력으로 진압한다. 노조원들을 바리게이드를 쌓고 대항하지만, 이들의 무차별적 폭력에 속수무책으로 당하고 공장 밖으로 무참히 끌려 나간다. 한수는 동료들의 비참한 모습을 외면하지 못하고, 공장 기계 가동을 멈추고 다른 노동자들과 함께 그들을 구하러 나간다.

A group of Americans who live together in an old mansion somewhere in Sweden spend their time between working at the local airplane plant and hanging out with their revolutionary friends. Smoke has something going with his boss's daughter, but when the boss finds out, he has some dudes beat up Smoke. This leads to a strike among the workers, and a break between the boss and his daughter who goes to live with Smoke and his friends. In order to save his job from angry stockholders, the boss offers Smoke a sizable amount of money to end the strike; but when Smoke and the guys spend the money on guns things get out of hand.

The film is about the workers unpaid for six years who decide to lay down the driveway in front of their factory. Oki is an unemployed factory worker and union leader. His son Gruja is a movie director unemployed for ten years, he shoots weddings and funerals in order to survive and save enough money to shoot his first feature film. White, unemployed opera singer and Gruja's girlfriend, is trying to make money by singing opera arias from house to house. The story is about ruined factories and workers without someone to lead them to a better life.
