몬티 월쉬(리 마빈 분)는 나이 많은 카우보이다. 서부개척 시대의 막바지에 그와 친구 쳇 롤린스(잭 팰런스)는 목장일이라면 무엇이든 닥치는 대로 하며 살아간다. 그들의 생활은 크게 두 가지로 나뉜다. 수개월 동안 카우보이 일을 하고 그것이 끝나면 새로운 일을 찾아 다른 마을을 전전하는 것. 그리고 그 과정에는 다른 카우보이들과의 우정과 경쟁이 언제든 따라다닌다. 또다시 새로운 일을 찾아 헤매던 둘은 칼 브레넌(짐 데이비스 분)의 목장에서 일을 하게 되고 그곳에서 옛 친구 쇼티 오스틴(미치 라이언 분)을 만난다. 몬티에게는 오랫동안 알고 지내온 애인 마르틴 버나드(진 모로 분)가 있다. 폐결핵을 앓고 있는 그녀는 술집에서 일한다. 한편 쳇은 철물점을 운영하는 과부 메리 이글(알린 앤 맥레리 분)과 사랑에 빠진다. 산업화에 밀려 카우보이의 일은 서서히 줄어들고 몬티와 친구들의 선택의 폭도 덩달아 줄어든다. 반대로 새로운 종류의 일이 생겨나지만 이들이 원하는 것은 소떼를 몰고 광활한 평원을 누비는 자유다. 일자리를 잃은 쇼티는 가축도둑질에 연루되고 결국 지방보안관을 총으로 쏘아 죽인다. 더불어 몬티와 쳇도 목장에서의 자신들의 삶이 불가항력에 의해 다른 방향을 향하고 있음을 느낀다. 메리와 결혼하여 그녀의 가게에서 일하게 된 쳇은 몬티에게 이제 과거의 생활은 끝났다고 말한다. 몬티도 마르틴에게 청혼을 하고 그녀는 승낙한다. 술에 취해 야생마를 타고 마을을 질주하는 몬티를 본 로데오 경기업자 윌슨 대령은 그에게 일자리를 제안하지만 형편없는 조건에 모멸감을 느낀 몬티는 거절한다. 결국 그들 모두는 평생을 바쳐온 직업을 떠나 새로운 시작을 해야만 하는 운명에 처한다. 쳇의 가게를 털려고 침입한 쇼티는 쳇을 총으로 쏘아 살해하고 폐결핵에 시달리던 마르틴의 죽음을 맞이한 몬티는 쇼티를 추적한다. Rich momma's boy Wade Kingsley Jr. an Eastern dude, tries to follow in his murdered father's footsteps by returning to the West to partner up with Slim Moseley Jr.,the son of his father's former partner. Wade overcomes Slim's initial reluctance to accept him by using his fortune to buy a prize cow and new car to help Slim in his job as foreman on the Kingsley family ranch, currently under siege by a gang of outlaws called "masked raiders." Wade generously tries to pay off the ranch's mortgage with $15,000 of his own money, but unfortunately neither "pardner" realizes that respected banker Dan Hollis, the son of their fathers' murderer, is the leader of the gang.

Ben (Glenn Ford) and Marion (Henry Fonda) are two cowboys who make a meager living breaking wild horses. Their frequent employer Jim (Chill Wills), who always gets the better of them, talks them into taking a nondescript horse in lieu of some of their wages.
