Steve is a man who has it all, a successful career, wonderful children, beautiful home and a loving wife. However, returning to his home after work on his birthday, he finds his house deserted and darkened with almost all the lightbulbs missing, all easy access outside cut off and a videotape waiting for him. Playing that tape, he watches a bizarre and grueling recording in which his wife explains her grievance with him, her reasons for disappearing with the children and her revenge for how he treated her in a way he would never forget.

Calvin and Leonard, two broke losers, are arrested for trying to rob rich old sisters Doris and Betty. The women have a change of heart, drop the charges and invite the the boys over to their mansion. Calvin decides he and Leonard should marry the women, and, when they soon die, live off the inheritance. The ladies, however, have run into their own financial troubles and wed the boys with plans of murdering them for insurance money.

전형적인 할리우드 관습의 서스펜스 스릴러. 한 백만장자의 죽음을 둘러 싸고 그의 아름다운 아내, 그녀의 정부, 킬러간의숨가쁜 관계를 흥미롭 게 묘사하고 있다. 이러한 설정은 지금껏 할리우드의 장르영화에서 수없 이 차용한 구조. 하지만(진실과 탐욕)의 경우, 아름다운 미망인을 "흑 인"으로 상정한 것이나 지극히 가벼운 신세대식 사랑법을 첨가. 장르 답습의지겨운 흥행논리에 변화를 주려고 했다. 감독인 에이미 홀든 존스는데미 무어 주연의 흥행작, (은밀한 관계), 애완견영화의 선두주자 (베토 벤) 등에서 필력을 과시했던 시나리오작가 출신. 그녀의 감독 데뷔작이기 도 한 (진실과 탐욕)은장르영화의 오밀조밀한 재미보다는 흑진주 할 베 리의 매력에 더 기대를 걸 만한 흥미위주의 작품.

매일 바쁘기만 한 엄마에게 불만이 많은 엘리자벳, 제레미, 해리 삼남매는 이웃 커버 아줌마에게 들은 새엄마를 얻을 수 있는 주문을 외운다. 그러자 다음날 엄마는 사라지고 엄마에 대한 기억도 말끔히 사라진다. 이들은 마미 마켓에 가서 엄마를 사오기로 결정하는데, 첫 번째 엄마는 화려한 의상을 걸친 부자 엄마지만 그녀는 애완 도마뱀을 보고 놀라 마미 마켓으로 돌아가 버린다. 두 번째는 운동에 능한 엄마를 고르지만 그녀는 자식보다는 운동과 경기에만 집착한다. 그리고 세 번째 엄마까지 실패로 돌아가자 이들은 비로소 진짜 엄마를 되찾고 싶어한다. 그리고 엄마의 기억을 되살리기 위해 지난 추억을 생각해 내자 다음날 엄마는 기억과 함께 다시 돌아온다.
