예기치 못한 사고로 다른 학교로 전학을 오게 된 17세 소녀 ‘루스’는 등교 첫 날 수갑을 찬 채 경찰차에서 내리는 ‘캠’을 보고 알 수 없는 끌림을 느낀다. 그러던 중 어느 날, 청소를 하고 있던 ‘루스’의 위로 조각상이 떨어지고, 그 순간 ‘다니엘’이 나타나 그녀를 구하는 일이 벌어진다. ‘루스’는 자신에게 다가오는 ‘캠’이 아닌 자신의 목숨을 지켜준 그에게 마음이 가기 시작하지만, 그럴수록 ‘다니엘’은 그녀를 외면한다. 그리고 ‘루스’는 우연히 자신이 수세기에 걸쳐 천사와 사랑에 빠지는 운명을 지니고 있으며, 그 중 한 천사와 첫키스를 하게 되면 죽는다는 것을 알게 되는데...

두 절친한 친구가 성장하여 하나는 유명한 갱이, 하나는 신부가 되는데 신부는 뒷골목의 불량 청소년들을 선도하려고 애쓰지만 갱이 된 친구를 소년들이 우상으로 생각하고 그를 따르기 때문에 번번이 실패한다. 그러다가 갱 친구는 체포되어 사형선고를 받게 된다. 신부는 그를 찾아가서 부탁한다. 아이들이 너를 우상으로 받드는 이상에는 그애들도 자라서 너처럼 될것이라고. 그러니 죽을때 제발 비겁하게 살려달라고 애원하며 죽어달라고 부탁한다. 친구는 자기는 그렇게 죽을 수 없다며 거절한다. 사형집행의 날. 가스실에 들어간 그는 마침내 제발 살려달라고 울부짖는다. 그는 친구의 마지막 부탁을 들어준 것이다. 그 사실이 보도되자 자신들의 영웅이 비겁하게 죽어갔다는 것을 안 소년들은 마침내 신부의 품으로 돌아온다. 1930년대에 워너 브라더스가 제작한 여러 갱스터/범죄 멜로드라마를 대표하는 영화들 중 하나인 이 영화는 제임스 캐그니와 팻 오브라이언이 앙상블을 이뤄 연기한 수많은 영화들 중 두 번째에 해당하는 영화이다. 이 영화를 통해 캐그니는 처음으로 아카데미 남우주연상에 지명되었으며, 그 외에도 이 영화는 최우수 감독상(마이클 커티즈), 최우수 각본상(롤랜드 브라운) 등에 노미네이트되었다.

Based on a true story: Norwegian winter, 1915. On the island Bastøy, outside Oslo, a group of young boys aged 11 to 18, are held in an institution for delinquent youth, notorious for its sadistic regime. One day a new boy, Erling, arrives, determined to escape from the island. After a tragic incident, he ends up leading the boys in a violent uprising. When the boys manage to take over the island, 150 soldiers are sent in to restore order.

Willie, a likeable kid, forms a friendship with Rikki, a new arrival at the reform school. Willie discovers that Rikki is maybe tough enough to take on Karl, the kingpin. Although Rikki is strong, he does not like to fight, but tensions mount as Karl's bullying become more obnoxious. After being shown up by Willie, Karl loses his temper and gives Willie a thrashing. As a result, Willie joins with some other boys in an escape. They steal a car, get drunk, and have a serious accident. Meanwhile Rikki is in hospital, injured in a forestry "accident' engineered by Karl.

Mazie, a poor orphan girl, is mistreated by cruel farmer Slag and his wife for whom she works. Mazie, who is growing into a woman, does not like they way Slag has been looking at her lately.

Reform school teacher tries to carry his class to the right path by teaching them diving.
