청년 링컨이 미국 정계에 입문하기 전의 상황이다. 약관의 나이에 변호사가 된 그는 아직은 풋내기지만 정의감이 강하다. 그는 첫 사건으로 살인혐의를 받은 두 청년의 변호 건을 맡게 된다. 이 과정에서 시골뜨기에 불과했던 그가 비로소 법률을 통해 자신의 뜻을 피력하게 된다. 또 켄터키주에서 온 메리 토드라는 아가씨와 만나게 되고, 그녀는 미래의 아내가 된다. 가끔 실수도 하지만 인간미가 있고, 실패를 통해서 점점 배워나가는 이 정직한 인물은 이제 정계에 입문하게 된다.
