월남전에서 제대한 그린베레 출신의 존 람보(John Rambo: 실베스타 스탤론 분)는, 전우를 찾아 록키 산맥의 어느 한적한 시골 마을에 도착한다. 하지만 그가 찾고자 하는 이는 이미 암으로 세상을 떠난 뒤였다. 마을 보안관 셔리프 윌 티즐(Sheriff Will Teasle: 브라이언 데니히 분)는 그의 부랑자 행색에 반감을 갖고 마을에서 쫓아내려한다. 하지만 람보가 순순히 응하지 않자 억지 죄목으로 체포하는데, 조사를 하는 과정에서 그 옛날 월맹 포로 수용소에서 받은 고문 기억이 악몽처럼 되살아나자, 람보는 갑자기 미친 사람처럼 광폭해져 경찰관과 경찰서를 때려 부수고 탈출한다. 경찰의 추적을 따돌리고 마을 산 속으로 숨어든 람보는 월남전에서 몸에 익힌 게릴라 전술로 경찰과 대치한다. 그러다 경찰 헬기를 피하고자 절벽에서 뛰어내려 결국 큰 부상을 입는다. 이때 저격의 위험 때문에 그가 던진 돌이 헬기 유리창을 맞추고 이틈에 경찰관 하트가 헬기에서 떨어져 죽는다. 위험에서 벗어난 람보는 피가 흐르는 팔을 바늘로 꿰맨다. 동료마저 잃은 경찰은 람보를 잡는데 혈안이 되어 사냥개를 이끌고 숲으로 추적해 오지만 결국 람보의 교묘한 전술로 모두 부상을 입고 물러난다. 사태가 커지자 지방 경찰 기동대와 주경비대대의 지원을 받아 주변의 모든 길이 통제되고, 이 일은 신문과 방송 등 메스컴의 집중을 받는데...

캘빈 파머(아이스 큐브 분)가 운영하는 이발소는 3대째 가업으로 내려오고 있는 역사가 깊은 이발소이다. 다양한 배경과 개성을 지닌 이발사들은 끊임없이 웃고 떠들면서 즐겁게 일한다. 그들의 흥겨운 분위기에 합세하여 장단을 맞추는 손님들로 인해 이발소에는 언제나 활기가 넘치지만 손님은 많지않아 이발소는 재정적인 어려움에 처한다. 그러자 캘빈은 이발소 대신 녹음 스튜디오를 열기로 하고 아내와 이발사들에게는 비밀로 한 채 2만 달러를 받고 고리대금업자 월러스에게 이발소를 넘긴다. 우연히 이 사실을 알게 된 아내는 가족의 역사가 담긴 이발소를 아무런 상의 없이 팔아치운 캘빈의 결정에 크게 실망한다. 곧 캘빈은 이발소가 가족은 물론 동네 사람들에게도 소중한 존재였다는 사실을 깨닫고, 이발소를 되찾기 위해 월러스를 만난다. 그러나 월러스가 4만 달러를 당장 내놓지 않으면 팔지 않겠다고 고집하자 캘빈은 이발소를 되찾으려는 계획을 포기한다. 한편, 전과 2범의 이발사인 리키의 사촌 JD는 그의 허락 없이 몰고 나온 트럭을 이용하여 이발소 근처의 편의점을 부수고, 현금 인출기를 훔쳐 달아난다. 현금 인출기 도난 사건을 추적하는 형사로부터 용의자로 몰린 리키는 자칫 종신형을 받을 수도 있게 되자 캘빈과 함께 JD를 찾아 나서는데...

이탈리아 출신인 니코는 어린 시절, 동양 무술을 동경하다가 일본으로 건너가서 무술 공부를 하게 된다. 그후 CIA 요원으로 월남전에 참전하지만 원주민을 너무 잔혹하게 다루는 CIA 요원 제이건의 행동에 반발해서 귀국하여 미국에서 형사로 활동하고 있다. 니코는 어느날 대규모 마약밀매에 관한 정보를 입수하고 사건현장에서 범인 살바노 일당을 체포한다. 범인을 FBI에 인도하지만 CIA 고위층의 명령으로 이들을 석방해 버린다. 이때부터 마약밀매범이 CIA와 연관됐다는 눈치를 챈 니코는 이들에 대한 본격적인 수사를 시작하고 제이건을 비롯한 부패 CIA 요원들은 니코와 그 가족을 협박한다. 한편 니코가 다니는 성당의 보조 신부 토마시노는 우연한 기회에 제이건 일당의 비리를 알게 되고 그 사실을 해리슨 상원의원에게 알린다. 제이건 일당은 성당에 폭발물을 터트려 토마시노를 제거하려 하지만...

월남 전쟁 중 실종된 미군 병사들의 소재 파악을 위해 호지명 시에 도착한 브래드덕 대령(Braddock: 척 노리스 분)은 월맹 관리들의 철저한 부인 때문에 뜻을 이루지 못한게 되자 독자적인 방법을 택하기로 결심한다. 국무성 보좌관인 미모의 앤(Ann: 레오어 캐스도프 분)과 함께 태국으로 잠입한 후 옛 군대 동료인 터크(Tuck: M. 에머렛 월쉬 분)를 설득시켜서 작전을 수행하게 된다. 터크는 무기 암거래상으로서 각종 화기와 상륙정까지 가지고 있었다. 포로들의 소재를 파악한 후 월맹을 벗어 나려는 찰나 검은 세단을 탄 정체 불명의 스파이들에게 습격을 당하게 된다. 아슬아슬한 위기를 넘긴 브래드덕은 트럭을 바다 속에 수장시킨 후 상륙정에 몸을 싣고 유유히 시동을 건 후 적지하를 벗어나 귀국길에 오른다.

때는 1965년, 미국은 하버드 석사 출신의 할 무어 중령을 비롯해 젊은 군인 395명을 베트남 아이드랑 계곡 X레이 지역에 투입한다. 이들이 맞서 싸워야 할 적군은 무려 2000여명의 정규군. 험준한 정글 지형에서 벌어진 미국과 베트콩의 최초 전투에서 미국은 처참한 병력을 상실하며 가까스로 승전을 거둔다. 이 전투를 진두지휘했던 할 무어 중령과 죠 갤러웨이 종군기자는 미국 전쟁사에서 잊혀진 72시간을 논픽션으로 집필했고 93년 베스트셀러가 된 이 책을 읽은 렌달 월레스 감독이 영화화했다.

Amidst the film's ribaldry, the hypocrisy and false piety of the monk are mercilessly mocked.

The Great Blondino follows an anachronistically attired young fellow as he navigates a beguiling, sometimes troubling world with a curiosity that opens us wide to the filmmakers’ inspired, freeform vision. In many ways, the wonder of Blondino may echo the excitement of invention and exploration that Nelson and Wiley experienced in the making of the film. Utterly exuberant and freed from rote cinematic restriction, it embodies an artistic rigor and direction that also prevents it from ever seeming too unhinged.
