레이나는 이제 갓 대학을 졸업한 사회초년생. 청운의 꿈을 안고 텍사스 TV 방송국에 입사하지만 고지식한 프로그램 진행자와의 갈등끝에 직장을 잃고 심한 경제적인 어려움을 겪게 된다. 그의 친구이자 가수 지망생인 트로이 역시 실직상태로 그녀의 아파트에 얹혀 사는 신세. 그런 그들사이에 전형적인 여피족인 방송국 부사장 마이클이 끼어들고, 레이나는 그의 끈질긴 구애로 인해 방황하게 된다. 그후 레이나는 마이클의 도움으로 자신이 만든 영화를 비디오로 출시하게 된다. 젊은 세대의 사고를 대변해 보겠다는 의도로 틈틈히 자신과 친구들의 일상생활을 카메라에 담아낸 기록영화였다. 그러나 상품으로 완성된 영화는 당초 의도와는 달리 지나치게 상업적인 요소들로 채워져 있었는데...

리처드 그랜트가 우스울 정도의 신랄함으로 연기하는 위드네일은 중산층 난봉꾼이면서 최저생계비로 생활하며 배우로서 일자리를 구하려고 (헛되게 게다가 뜸하게) 노력하고, 폴 맥건은 제목의 ‘나’로 위드네일과 한 집에 살고 있는 더 조용하고 약간 더 신중한 젊은이로 역시 좋은 연기를 보여준다. 이 둘은 지저분한 런던북부 빈민가를 떠나 위드네일의 돼지 같은 게이 삼촌 몬티(리처드 그리피스)의 호숫가 오두막으로 휴가를 떠난다. 그곳에서 이 가난하고 술과 마약에 목매단 두 사람은 시골의 방식과 삼촌의 정열에 어리둥절하고 당황하고 심지어 포위 당한 느낌이다.
