Após a faculdade, Lelaina (Winona Ryder) filma um documentário sobre si mesma e amigas como ela, que se debatem para começar relacionamentos e a carreira. Vickie (Janeane Garofalo) trabalha em vendas, tem uma sequencia interminável de uma noite só e aguarda os resultados de seu teste de HIV. Sammy (Steve Zahn), tenta sair com seus pais. Lelaina se envolve com Michael (Ben Stiller), enquanto mantém uma relação de amor e ódio com Troy (Ethan Hawke), que está passando por uma crise existencial.
