부유한 가정의 고등학교 졸업반인 바비(Bonnie: 엠버 드니즈 오스틴 분)는 아버지의 성화로 예일 대학에 진학하려 하는데 불어가 낙제 점수를 맞자 아버지는 재시험을 위해 미모의 개인교수 테리(Terry Green: 카렌 케이 분)를 고용한다. 한참 사춘기인 바비는 개인 교수와의 사랑을 환상으로 그리며 공부에는 관심이 없다. 바비는 아버지의 강요로 예일대학에 지원하나 본인은 UCLA의 천문학과에 가고 싶어 한다. 테리는 바비의 천진난만함에 끌려 바비로 하여금 사랑에 눈을 뜨게 해준다. 바비는 테리의 애인인 돈(Don Sylvester: 브루스 보어 분)에게 질투심을 느끼게 되고 둘은 꿈과 같은 시간을 보낸다. 그런데 졸업 시험에 합격은 하나 아버지에게서 보너스로 만불을 받기로 했다는 얘길 듣고 그동안 자기에게 잘해준 것은 모두 돈 때문이었다고 테리에게 공격한다. 그러나 테리는 그게 아니라고 말하나 외면을 당한다. 테리가 가족이 있는 프랑스로 떠나게 되자 바비는 그녀에게 사과를 하고 아버지에게 자기가 원하는 천문학과에 가겠다고 선언한다.
