Harmonica (1974)

프랭크가 보낸 세명의 총잡이가 기차역에서 누군가를 기다린다. 드디어 그들이 기다리던 한 남자가 하모니카를 불며 기차역에 도착하고, 그들 세 총잡이는 모두 이름 없는 그 남자의 총에 쓰러진다. 한편, 프랭크와 그 부하들은 아일랜드 출신인 맥베인 일가를 잔인하게 살해하는데, 뉴올리언즈에서 이제 막 도착한 맥베인의 새 아내 질로서는 황망할 수밖에 없다. 두 사람은 한달 전 이미 결혼을 한 상태였다. 다시 뉴올리언즈로 돌아가려던 질은 마음을 고쳐먹고 맥베인과 아이들의 시체만 있는 그 집에서 혼자 생활을 시작한다.

시카모어 가족은 사업가였지만 인생을 즐기는 것에 역점을 두기 시작 한 반더호프 할아버지에 의해 이끌어지는 별난 가족이다. 시카모어 가족 일원은 누구나 자신들이 하고 싶은 것을 하며 산다. 할아버지의 딸인 페니 시카모어는 우연히 집으로 타자기가 배달된 것을 계기로 소설가가 되는가 하면 페니의 남편은 지하실에서 폭죽을 만드는 것에 열을 올리고, 또 그 두 부부의 딸인 에씨는 발레 지도 선생의 평가와는 달리 자신이 최고의 발레리나라고 꿈꾸는가 하면, 에씨의 남편 에드는 일보다는 실로폰을 연주하거나 에씨가 만든 사탕을 하나하나 포장지에 싸서 파는 것으로 시간을 보낸다. 시카모어 가족에서 정상적인 단 한 사람 앨리스 시카모어는 부유한 토니 커비와 사랑에 빠지는데, 고루하고 거만한 커비 일가가 시카모어 가족의 집에 저녁 식사를 하러 오면서 재앙 같은 사건이 벌어진다.

유진(랄프 마치오)은 클래식 기타 신동이지만 유명한 블루스 기타리스트가 되는게 꿈인 음대생이다. 그래서 그는 오래된 블루스 음악의 전설을 찾아 나선다. 그 전설은 미시시피 델타 지역의 오랜 이야기로 크로스로드에서 악마에게 영혼을 팔면 재능을 얻을 수 있다고 하는데...

Jimmy, the owner of a failed music shop, goes to work with his uncle, the owner of a food factory. Before he gets there, he befriends an Irish family who happens to be his uncle's worst enemy because of their love for music and in-house band who constantly practices. Soon, Jimmy finds himself trying to help the band by getting them gigs and trying to reconcile the family with his uncle.

Near the end of the war in Germany, GI Steve Boland, a self-described "sharp-operator", meets a German girl, Ilsa, and they fall in love. Ilsa's brother Karl, whom she has not seen in three years, and his fellow Nazi Ludwig visit Ilsa. Karl proudly informs her that he and Ludwig are "Werewolves", a group of Nazi assassins parachuted behind Allied lines for the purpose of killing Allied High Command officers. She and Steve go to Army Intelligence with their information, where Steve is immediately arrested for being A.W.O.L. Captain Melton of Army G-2 intervenes on Steve's behalf, as G-2 has had a suspicion about the existence of the "Werewolves" but no concrete info before now.

Set on the southern coast of Iran, "Harmonica" begins as a young boy receives a musical present from abroad. Fascinated and envious, his friends make him the leader of the pack, as they compete for the privilege of holding the harmonica or even blowing a few notes, until the games and horseplay begin to take on a sinister edge.

The neighbor buys a larger harmonica, and an arms race ensues; the instruments get larger, until it's a piano vs. a pipe organ, and then they start bringing in larger groups of friends until an entire orchestra is playing the 1812 Overture. The houses collapse from all this, atop the dueling orchestras, and on their way up to heaven, the man puts his small harmonica up for sale.

In this old-time Western from director George Sherman, peaceable cowpoke Jack Summers takes the job of sheriff to help his adopted town in its bid to beat out a nearby settlement for a lucrative railroad contract. Trailcross is trying to get the new railroad and Stevens wants it to go to Mason City. Jack and sidekick Nevady arrive and when Jack faces down Stevens' men, he is made Marshal. The townspeople raise money for the railroad and entrust it to Jack. But Stevens plants two of his henchmen as Jack's escorts and they rob him. With the Railroad Officials due to arrive, Jack must retrieve the money.

Film biography of Eileen Joyce, the celebrated Australian pianist, concentrating on her childhood in the Tasmanian bush and the Kalgoorlie goldfields. Opening and closing scenes showed the pianist herself performing at a concert.

Arguably Larry Gottheim’s most exuberant experiment in the single-shot, single-roll format (and his first with a soundtrack), HARMONICA trains the camera on a friend improvising a tune in the backseat of a moving car.
