TV 뉴스 리포터 사이먼 헌트(리처드 기어)는 카메라맨 덕(테렌스 하워드)과 함께 보스니아에서 이라크, 소말리아에서 엘살바도르를 누비며 취재현장에서 종군기자로 활동하고 에미상을 수상한다. 어느 날 보스니아에서 끔찍한 학살이 일어나고 사이먼의 모든 것이 변화된다. 전국에 생방송되는 순간 정신이 나가버리고 어처구니없는 멘트를 하면서 방송사고가 난다. 그 후 덕은 승진하고 사이먼은 사라진다. 5년 후 덕은 신입 리포터 벤자민과 종전 5주년 기념식을 취재하기 위해 사라예보로 돌아온다. 귀신처럼 다시 나타난 사이먼은 덕에게 500만 불의 현상금이 걸린 전쟁범 "폭스"의 은신처를 알고 있다고 확신하며 전 세계 독점을 약속한다. 단지 그럴듯한 정보에 만 의지한 사이먼과 덕 그리고 벤자민은 외부인들에게 적대적인 지역으로 들어가며 위험한 취재를 시작한다. 이들은 천신만고 끝에 현상범인의 측근까지 접근하는데 이들을 CIA 특공대로 오인한 무리들에게 죽음을 당하려는 절체절명의 순간이 다가오는데...

앤디 말로우는 전직 영국 특수부대(SAS) 출신의 용병이다. 쿠데타로 인해 세르비아의 수상이 살해당하자 그는 발칸지역에서 은밀하게 정찰 임무를 수행하게 된다. 반란을 일으킨 인물은 올로단 크라코비치로 크로아티아 육군의 지휘관 출신이자 수배 중인 전범이다. 혼란을 틈타 오로단의 병력은 미국대사관을 습격하고, 미국 대사와 그의 참모를 인질로 잡는다. 미국은 고심 끝에 비밀리에 구출 작전을 수행할 용병을 해당지역에 투입한다. 앤디와 그의 팀은 어둠을 틈타 슈레브레니카 지역에 투입된다. 유엔 평화유지군으로 위장한 미국의 군사병력은 용병을 지원할 수는 있지만, 실제 작전에 참여할 수는 없다. 앤디와 그의 팀은 은밀하게 올로단의 본부로 잠입하여 올로단을 붙잡고 대사와 그의 참모를 구출한다. 하지만 구출 작전을 완료하기 위해서는 갈 길이 멀다. 올로단과 대사와 참모를 데리고 남쪽으로 40km 떨어진 안전 지대로 이동해야 한다. 올로단의 오른팔이 용병들을 쫓고, 그들의 임무는 예상과는 다른 방향으로 흘러간다. 용병들은 적의 숫자와 무기가 더 월등한 상황에서 패배할 확률이 높은 전투에 임해야만 한다.

In Marseille, the young Serbian-Albanian Adria Shala is an illegal immigrant traumatized by her past. Every now and then Adria recalls her life in Kosovo, when she was saved from rape by a deserter called Srdjan Vasiljevic in 1999. They move to Belgrade where Srdjan becomes a gangster, dealing weapons and becoming an assassin. Adria learns how to shoot and helps Srdjan with his work at first, becoming his mistress later.

The story takes place in Nis, towards the end of the nineteenth century, during the calm down of the stormy historic events which led to final liberation of southern Serbian parts from Turkish occupation. The comedy is about celebrating traditional saint's day feast, organized by Ivko and how his guests test the Serbian hospitality.

The second topic follows tragic but passionate relationship between Vuk's younger brother and his wife, which ends with her long-lasting disease and death.

Local Volksdeutschers (ethnic Germans) enlist with the Nazi occupiers. The village bum, Leksi, jumps at the opportunity to put on a uniform and parade around with a gun. Leksi gets into an argument with villagers Marko and Joca, who devise a plan to get rid of him. At the same time, Marko tries to seduce Leksi's wife, Anika.
