중산층의 고교생 노베르는 무심코 만든 위조지폐로 사진가게에서 친구와 함께 사용한다. 나중에야 그것이 위조지폐임을 깨달은 주인은 석유를 배달하는 이본에게 이 지폐를 지불한다. 위조지폐범으로 몰린 이본은 재판에서 자신의 결백을 증명하려 하지만 사진가게 종업원 루시앙의 위증으로 패소한다. 일자리를 잃은 이본은 은행을 털다 감옥에 가고 결국 딸과 아내마저 잃는다. 브레송의 마지막 작품인 이 영화는 톨스토이의 중편 를 모티브로 각색한 작품.
