일상에 지친 도시의 세 남자 미치(빌리 크리스탈), 에드(브루노 커비), 필(다니엘 스턴)은 자유를 찾기 위해 도시를 떠나 뉴멕시코에서 콜로라도까지 200 마일에 걸친 소몰이 여행을 떠난다. 미치의 실수로 소떼가 집단으로 탈출하고, 기술을 전수하던 베테랑 카우보이가 심장마비로 죽자 이들은 우왕좌왕한다. 세 사나이는 남은 여정에 불안해하지만 스스로의 힘으로 거친 황야를 헤쳐나가기 시작하는데...

윌 앤더슨(존 웨인)은 아내와 함께 목장을 운영하는 60세 노인이다. 월동준비를 위해서 수백마리의 소떼를 몰고 먼 거리를 이동해야 하는데 소몰이를 해야 할 일꾼들이 모두 금광소문에 혹 해서 떠나버리자 결국 그는 고육지책으로 15살 이하의 어린 학생들을 훈련시켜서 긴 소몰이 여정을 떠나게 된다. 11명의 소년과 60세의 노인, 그리고 요리사로 채용한 흑인 나이틀링거 이렇게 13명의 일행이 소떼를 몰고 출발하고 밤낮으로 이동하는 강행군을 펼치게 된다. 소년들은 앤더슨의 강압적인 강행군에 처음에는 반발하지만 점점 그를 이해하게 된다. 하지만 그들이 출발할 때부터 뒤를 따라온 10여명의 일행들이 있었는데 막 감옥에서 막 출옥한 긴 머리의 악당(브루스 던)과 일당들이다. 그들은 앤더슨의 소떼를 노리고 뒤를 쫓아온 것이었다.결국 소떼들을 노린 악당들에 의하여 앤더슨은 처참하게 죽임을 당하게 되고, 이제 남은 아이들이 앤더슨의 복수를 위해 뜻을 모은다 그리고 악당들을 처치하고 소떼를 다시 찾는다.
